The sheer toughness of a barbarian is definately an advantage, but the feats of a fighter are nice too. I guess it depends on what you really want to be. Skilled fighter or tough brawler? From a power perspective though go Bbn9/Rng1, that's a no-brainer and it even fits the class a lot...

A raging barbarian with a spiked chain makes for great battlefield control.

They work best as a team in my opinion. One without the other has weak points. I've done enough nasty things to archers like grapple, sunder bows, disarm, etc where they have weak points.
