Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Okay, now I see what you're getting at...heh, I guess I simply didn't make the connection because I don't hope wealth by level changes, but merely the dependency on the "big six", as they are so lovingly called by now. For example, Damage Resistance doesn't need special plusses anymore, so even...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Yeah well, that's a given...is the same way right now already after all. When you take levels in a prestige class, your base class abilities don't advance at the same time except if you took a prestige class that added class abilities similar to your base class (e.g. sneak attack or spell...

Pathfinder OGL/3.5 RPG system from Paizo

Man, and here I was happy that Pathfinder had diverted all the 3E/4E hate-posts into creativity on the Alpha edition..seems some find anything as a good excuse to start edition-bashing. :\

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

I can see the problem with the treasure in old 3E adventures, but what about Wealth-by-Level or improved base classes will make an old prestige class useless? :uhoh: I don't see any connection to the first, and the second only means the base class is already pretty powerful, and the prestige...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

The skill system definitely is one of the hottest debated topics over at the Paizo boards, and it brings up a lot of interesting points. There's a little list of suggestions I've collected about how to "simplify" the 3.5 system while still keeping a large degree of compatibility, and I think...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Well, to be honest, I doubt you can "fix" this for D&D as it was up to 3.5, which is probably why they are trying to remake it into something new with 4E. It has to be seen how well that works, but that's beside the point. The best workaround, in my opinion, is to settle the game very solidly...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Hmmm, interesting post for sure. :) Two comments at the moment... Domain powers sure look like the cleric gets to use both of them, but the text doesn't specify either way. The same comment about bonus spells for clerics goes here, too...especially if they get to use both domain abilities for a...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Nah, of course not. Just as I don't fault Monte Cook et al. for creating this kind of playstyle in the first place, I can't expect Buhlman to try and "reeducate" anybody. That's still mostly our responsibility (meaning players and DMs). And if people who have found this kind of playstyle...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Yep, that's what the elven wizard in Pathfinder gets over the elven wizard in D&D 3.5, and yes, I'd cut the bonus spells for high INT out as well, as they did with the specialist bonus spells already. And yes, I keep insisting that this will make a Headband of Intellect, or wands of magic...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

See my entry under "School Powers". :) Seeing as this is comparable with an internalized Headband of Intellect +2 that is not necessary anymore now...is this bad in any way? Also, I must correct myself...bonus spells are still in! I've got to say, this is something that should definitely...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

I guess you could even make a case for dwarves as a fey race, if you look at some of the more scandinavic roots of dwarves. It's one if those points...I love gnomes for the simple reason that they fill a perfect niche as dwarf-like crafters of magical items. They fill the role of Alberich in the...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Re: stat boosters I think I get the point...or at least I hope I do. :uhoh: Still looks to me like 75% a playstyle that got out of hand. Sure, it is an assumption that is not unreasonable. As it is not unreasonable that an NPC spellcaster will charge you a good part more (require services, etc)...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

No, what I don't understand is the assumption that the characters will have such an easy access to all those magical items. Sorry if that sounds a bit ignorant, but the problems you (and others) allude to (and not just now, I know) simply never popped up in my games, so I can only take the words...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

Man, I knew they were offering the finished rules for preorder on their website, but I didn't know they were handing them out for secret preview ALREADY! All I got was this Alpha 1 pdf, and that only has the first proposals for rule changes and expansions. And oddly enough, I'd say at least 75 %...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Each class already has its very own means to match the opponents the fighter can tangle with in a 1-on-1, in your face, sword on mug kind of way. Magic-users (as a general category) use their magic to either battle them from afar, or use it on themselves to wade into melee, or simply use it on...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Yes, there is? The same thing that could prevent this from happening in 3.X , too? The DM. You know, the guy who controls everything outside of the player's purview (and in 3.X, magical item acquisition is not yet the purview of the players. Creation, yep...but there's only so many XP sinks a PC...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

I have the impression this "power bump" all over is one step in trying to lessen the "christmas tree" problem..internalize some of the effects of magical boosters, and you can make them rarer down the line without affecting backwards compatibility too much.

    The State of Our Hobby

I think the "State of Our Hobby" is as strong as it hasn't been for quite some time, in parts thanks to D&D 3E. There is one big brand that is extremely successful...and is wide open (thanks to OGL) to being kept alive through other publishers. There is a new edition, coming from the most...

How about "Their bonus spells" as an answer? Might not weigh up the gain of school abilities, cantrips at will and the broadened Arcane Bond ability, but they do lose something. :)
