D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

My point was, with certain cantrips, it never made sense for the cleric to use a weapon. He didn't even realize it for a while. He just did what he thought was best. Eventually he realized he had never use his weapon, and that felt strange to him. While he certainly could do so, it would...

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

No, I don't. The fighter used bows when it made sense to use bows. It was strange how the class you would expect to be the most monotonous was actually the most varied.

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I wouldn't tell my players, only x of you get to be casters. Anyway, it's not so much the number of casters. A big part of it is that every class has a casting subclass. All but one of my party can cast spells and only one was a traditional spellcasting class. So, to me, it feels like anyone...

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I think we're of like mind regarding this. 95% of my D&D history is 1E. The biggest shock starting up 5E was just how much magic there was. I know they say it's low magic, but I assume they're comparing it to editions I haven't played. The fact that the rogue in my campaign can cast a spell...

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

It's on one of my posts on the prior page. Forgive my ignorance on forum mechanics, I'm not sure if there's a way for me to link to that post.

D&D 5E Draw a sword and sheathe a dagger with free action ?

Never thought of that. RAW is probably no, but I'd allow it at my table. It has the built in disadvantage that the character is no long in possession of the item. Meaning it would definitely take an action to pick it back up. Also, the enemy could pick it up, and that could be interesting :)

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

Sorry, I'm still not following you. I'm not disallowing anything. The rules allow for a wizard to cast a spell/cantrip every 6 seconds. It's no different than a fighter using sword every turn. The rules balance spells (not cantrips) by restricting how many you can cast in a time frame...

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I have limited cantrips and have a warlock in my game. I worked with the player to come up with a rule that met both our approval. It can be done.

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I'm not following you. There are rules for travel. I assume you mean destroying a castle with a mace. If a player wanted to try, I'd let him. I'd establish a HP value for the castle (somewhere in the millions) and the player would have to roll for each attack. Eventually, (per our table...

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I limited cantrips in my campaign because it was just getting boring. The only thing the warlock ever did was cast Eldritch Blast. (Eldritch Blast is too powerful for a cantrip, IMO) The cleric had some decent weapons but it never made sense to use them. The players and I talked about it...

D&D 5E Critical Hits: Why not x2 damage?

Our table rule (definitely not streamlined, but it's fun if the players like to roll dice) is to roll a d10 on a roll of 1 or 20: 20/1-7: Normal 20, roll 2 dmg dice 20/8: Max dmg + roll 1 dmg die 20/9: Max dmg x 2 20/10: Max dmg x 3 1/4-10: Nothing 1/2-3: Minor botch (weapon stuck in tree...

D&D 5E Clearly the biggest design flaw of 5e

Dice Deficiency Syndrome is a terrible scourge throughout our hobby.

D&D 5E Does anyone actually track rations?

As a DM I generally don't. To my surprise the players of my group do. One of the PCs can forage, but not enough for the whole party, so they rotate who has to use rations.
