The importance of being a 20

I hear you! Although i understand why they balanced the races the way they did (wanting a human dominated player character demographic), i do not actually agree with them. Even being a 1E fan that i am, i still (and always have) find the standard racial modifiers a bit .... constricting? If...

D&D 5E Is the rapier "necessary"?

I'd just make the long sword 2d4 to compensate for the larger heavier blade and more momentum. Probably add a heavy attribute to it, to prevent it from being used in dual wielding too. Bur are they all in the same mechanics category? Is a long sword really the equivalent of an arming sword when...

D&D 5E Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

But it isn't so in 5E. Now any lower CR monster/enemy can be a threat if present in sufficient (and still more manageable) numbers. And (at least) i personally feel the rise in power of my PC more by being able to measure that power through metrics like how many of the said critters can i handle...

D&D 5E Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Yep. And it's that insistence of staying on the power curve that made the whole experience feel so gamey. If you didn't level those Cobolts, no matter the numbers, they just wouldn't feel a threat. The whole affair just brought too many Oblivion nightmares back to life..... :(

D&D 5E Is the rapier "necessary"?

Though an extra hand on the grip would provide some speed and power to a say migration era/arming sword, we could say the same for every weapon, be it gladius or even a dagger. However, even if this wasn't an issue, there is very distinctive way the one handed "long" blades were used as opposed...

D&D 5E Is the rapier "necessary"?

I think you can safely drop the rapier out, especially if you drop the large 2 handed axes and swords too. Thus there will be only a 1 die size difference (d6 vs d8) between the Dex and Str based users. Are there any large east Asia weapons from your goal time period that are equivalents to...

D&D 5E New "Fighting Style": Versatile

    Good point there....

D&D 5E Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

A sham definitely! After the first several levels, when it became all to obvious how things fair, my group got increasingly disillusioned with the edition.

The importance of being a 20

And i think this is why i like BA so much. Still, while i may be able to pull 18, 16, 14, (from a standard array) i'm not sure i can get 18, 16, 16 without sacrificing some feats i like. In a no feat game though? Yeah, definitely!

D&D 5E Great Weapon Fighting and damage dice from other sources

I like your idea, so i'm awarding you xp :D

D&D 5E Great Weapon Fighting and damage dice from other sources

In that case there is a clear difference between the intent and the wording as is in the PHB. I wonder if this makes the issue largely academic and mostly a thing of DM concession....

D&D 5E Great Weapon Fighting and damage dice from other sources

I'm ok either way. So far i rolled with just the weapon dice as well, i was just afraid i might be doing to wrong. I just wanted to know what you people here make of it by RAW.

D&D 5E Great Weapon Fighting and damage dice from other sources

So, the title is pretty much self explanatory. Does the GWF give extra roll on 1 or 2 (as long as you use a weapon with two hands) even for damage rolls that do not involve that weapon directly? Like i.e. the superiority die or the hunter's mark, or something similar?

I guess it might be a good idea the consult the DM as too how far the campaign might take these characters.

D&D 5E New "Fighting Style": Versatile

Personally i have been looking for a reason to pick up a versatile long sword for quite some time (in the absence of a distinction between an arming sword and a long sword), so i'd roll with it. Then again, i'm not a fan of axes anyway. :D
  16. TheLoneRanger1979

    D&D 5E Was I in the wrong?

Essentially this. I'm not a fan of "gotcha" tactics myself (way to easy to pull them off when you are the DM, even when without intent), but if the table considers this example to be a slight, then it is a slight. If the table thinks nothing of it, then joke around about it. But if the two sides...

D&D 5E New "Fighting Style": Versatile

I like it, but i wonder how other people would react. 1d8+1d4 would make a 7 expected damage output, while a 1d12 THF would yield a 7.33? I can see the great ax fans having issues with this.

The importance of being a 20

That actually made me think...... i'll need to get both sheets side by side again. Right after level 6. So i can get horde breaker by level 9 (faster then the 3rd fighter attack). EDIT: I just did. So, it boils down to what i want my lvl20 feature to be; an extra ASI or an extra action surge...

The importance of being a 20

Me too. Is it better to go level 3 or level 4 and get the ASI as well?

The importance of being a 20

Exactly my line of thinking. I am yet to do the math on the 2nd fighting style though. Is Defense worth considering?
