ZEITGEIST Encounter balance in Zeitgeist 4E

Ran my first game of 4e and my first game of the Zeitgiest adventure path last week. My players had a great time and thought it was cool - as did I. I did have one issue though and am now wondering if I need to do anything about the encounter balance. With a group of GM + 4 players and ran the...

official revision to skill challenge system

It is slightly frustrating we are back to the 'everyone sit on their hands/roll stupid aid another actions while the face guy does all the talking.' model of doing things. I thought the idea was not to be there.

D&D 4E 4e Battle Tactic: Murder by Pinball

It's on page 1 one of the thread dude. Reproduced below. Enabling zig zag super pushes. Murderball is alive an well.

D&D 4E 4e Battle Tactic: Murder by Pinball

Doesn't the core tenant behind the rules of exception based design preclude the application of rules designed for one purpose to something else? Going prone when knocked into hindering terrain is an exception for natural obstacles and doesn't apply to a spell unless the exception is...

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

Okay. I guess I assumed you where joking because the skill challenges system is a glaring counterpoint to that statement. I mean presumably the designers would have considered the math is completely broken as they do it for a living and the game playing public only took 5 to 6 whole nanoseconds...

    Invisible Paladin

So say for the purposes of discussion I cannot meaningfully engage the paladin who's DCed (maybe he has a ranged weapon and is shooting me from ontop a cliff. I don't care, whatever) Doesn't this mean I can avoid the DC effect by closing my eyes and attacking the darkness?

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

I initally thought you were joking, but now I'm not so sure. I'd check your post history, but I have to be a community support for that. Are you really saying that the entire, say, skill challenge system is golden, and everything they left out sucks? Or are you joking. It reads like you are.

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

I think Kaydark draws a very good point though - with M:TG they hire tournament winning players/constructors to assess rules mechanics and individual cards. I would not be a satisfactory replacement for these people, so doing the same testing with me (an 'average gamer') at the helm would not be...

    Mike Mearls comments on design

Word. People who accuse me of selective reading then haven't actually read it ftl. Also, there are numerous ways in D&D of making an encounter grind to a halt for 10 rounds while you fire off diplomacy, like, wall of thorns. Or standing further away and getting your diplomat on via telepathy...

    Mike Mearls comments on design

Yeah, but as I said, not particularly comforting ;) Edit: I guess I'm trying to say 'no more abuseable' isn't really saying anything, because either they are extremely abuseable or don't exist.

    Mike Mearls comments on design

But the rules for diplomacy as is are completely unplayable. If you use the DMG tables for changing attitudes you can make people fanatic followers vastly to easily (ignoring the very existance of charm here for a moment), and if you don't, I'm just left eyeballing some sort of outcome that...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E Presentation videos

This is highly unlikely - as with world of warcraft, Wizards also have the complete list of codes they have issue, so they can block any of the ones not actually issued. The next part of that is that they will also probably have a validation code with the activation code - so that if you are...

    Wraithstrike balance evaluation examples

    1. No 2. Excellent - I focused on the first one! I'm sure you can dumpster dive supplmenets and really break it, but lets face it, we can all do that! 3. Well, a wizard can do that too, off the top of my head... lets say we polymoph into a grey render, cast mage armour and shield, then wear...

    Wraithstrike balance evaluation examples

Right.. so working with that, trying to built a straight up full arcane caster who is demonstrably better, to show that while Wraithstrike is a hardcore tactic, 12th level characters do hardcore things. Not sure what prestige class to go for though - entry requirements are pretty free and easy...

    Wraithstrike balance evaluation examples

I disgree. The spell should be evaluted by examining how much it increases the performance of the architype it is designed for against monsters of similar CR when compared to the performance a Wizard, Cleric or Druid will put in against those monsters. That is the performance metric.. built into...

    Wraithstrike balance evaluation examples

Well, question wasn't posed to me, but counters are easy to come by for casters at this level - both wall of force or wall of thorns completely own this concept (I notice the level 12 version first post cannot fly or walk through walls, and wall of thorns may as well be (to quote frank trollman)...

    Wraithstrike balance evaluation examples

This build seems to be.. well, prety damn good... but it is out of line vs a Cleric, Druid or Wizard of level 12? I'd say.. not particularly. Probably a bit I choose not to consider any other class, because they are.. the suck. Taking the wizard - this combo seems awesome against monsters with...

How Often Does Your Group Cast Stoneskin?

Don't really use it that much, DR/10 isn't a HUGE effect at level 7-10, so the slot is getting used for other things - and haven't played much beyond that. I suspect it would be mostly useless because things hit like frieght trains in the games I'm playing - heal would be a damn sight better.

    Warforged ECL 0???? Yeah right!!!!

Curses, you are correct! I retract that portion of my statement, but again note that it is still has no effect in any of the CR 10 encounters in the book :) the iconic Fighter 10 warforged is still going to get squashed, immunities or no. I'll scope out for some challenges where level drain is...

    Warforged ECL 0???? Yeah right!!!!

I think warforged are slightly sucky? They seem to make fairly dodgey wizards/clerics/druids - the power classes, easily, and in a warrior/monk incarnation, they are still woefully unable to fight character level apporiate challenges at high level - and the vaunted immunities don't seem to be an...
