DM fun vs. Player fun...Should it be a compromise?

I guess this is where I see 3.x now. In the olden days, you would have had to cast identify on the sword and that would have allowed for me as DM to throw the history into it if it was well known. otherwise it was a +1 sword with a special power. Now you don't hear bards use...

    Re-trying 1st Ed.

I am waiting for my 1e players handbook so I can relive the glory days. Then off to the flinty hills of greyhawk and DESTINY OF KINGS

Does social standing have a place in your game?

Sorry Raven Crowking I'm lazy today :p Good luck on the rules and let us know what you come up with!

    Smaller or bigger dungeons?

I voted small, but I do like the old school crawls. I like the idea behind small ones due to the amount of effort it would take to createw/magic a big one. Also as others have said, I want a realistic eco-system not a countdown through MMIII for example.

    Ignorance on the web

Of course the funniest(not a word) part is the ads by Google. They lead to the Satanic worship of dice and DnD tactics and others. You got to give it to commercialism  Since it was written 3 years ago I don't put much stock in it. Otherwise it would be as big as ENworld  My...

Campaign Cartographer Maps - Updated 7/17

Great job! I yonked! the gallery 23 for my Greyhawk Flinty hills campaign for Destiny of Kings. It represents Dunthrane from the module.

    Bag of Holding

I will say that as DM you can rule anything as you want it. I don't think it is very wise to use a bag of holding for capturing people. I don't see it as putting an item in to statis, it merly is a 30 cu ft "bag" that allows one to carry many bulkly items with little cost to encumbrance...

    Attacking the Thief-Guild

I like the "room" feeling for the guild. I would just suggest that as far as a challenge go for what you feel is higher. Too often as DM's we want to make it "right", and that usually means it's too easy so we try t obuff up the BBEG while the scene is going on. In this case, if it starts out...

[Alignment Fun]My G party has a CE henchman!

Since you asked  Throk won't last long in the world you described. How is he allowed to stay in the town if everyone knows orcs are the result of demon/human coupling? You would have a mob trying to kill him and he in turn trying to kill them. In addition he will constantly remind...

    Hoplite Combat Feat-- Too strong?

I think it looks ok. A pc may not want to take it but as your post implied it was for NPC's. You're basically allowing the spear to be used one-handed and giving up strength and power attack bonuses. You didn't specify if you still had reach with the spear. You'll need to clarify that.

    5-foot step and Huge Monsters

I've given thought to this also but from a dfferent angle. I don't like guargantuan sized creatures. How the heck does a red dragon that size even survive eating just a few cattle per day and how does it not outgrow it hidey-hole every year or so. I prefer that no creature is larger that huge...

    Discussion of Art in D&D

Overall I definately agree. I like my medieval feel also. Where it could have been different is the "look" they went for didn't really stand out. Even a neutral stance should have came through as a "form". Monsters are the same way in this regard. I don't see any humanoid having better...

Should clerics use raise dead scrolls from another faith?

I agree it would bog the game down unless it was done on just a few scrolls of obvious origin. I mean the BBEG could have got the scrolls off previous do-gooders that helped him obtain his rise to pre-eminence  But, while I can see Divine magic as coming from different planes and...

Gaming in the Military - Your Experiences?

I too must go in the "way back" machine. I was USMC from 82-86 in Pendleton. My 3 hobbies were drinking, computers(apple iie with DUODISK drive), and every weekend from Friday night at 8pm till Sunday night about 8pm Non-stop DnD in an upstairs barracks with 5 of us and the DM. We all took...

Should clerics use raise dead scrolls from another faith?

Well since your tagline said should, then NO is the answer maybe :D I agree with others that it would require a little more work to do this right. However, I don't think its as hard as others mention either. First off IMHO, gods of death and evil gods don't have raise dead spells, scrolls...

    Sense Motive

@KingCrab I would allow a dfferent roll for each different subject that the player asks about. Also as others have said, you learn that he is holding something back and you may or may not let the player know. By subject I mean if you are asking about the BBEG then "anything" that has to do...

Gaxmoor - did anyone ever play this?

I seconded the part about prep. I too have read through it and it gives you plenty in a round about way. If I run it, you almost need it to be a place to visit, beat upon the creatures, leave, do some other things, come back later and continue the beatings, etc. I do enjoy the variety of make...

    Rope Trick

Remember this is a 2nd level spell so it really doesn't do more than provide a place of safety for up to 8 creatures/people for 1 hour per level. If you brought the material and had a way to write on something solid then I as a DM would allow you to craft items. Of course you need a light...

    Colorful characters at the inn

So true! Of course you need little ones(I mean children) that are stablehands and rouseabouts. Have the Smithy attached to the Inn so you have your burly bumbler except when he has his hammer and tongs! Washer women during the day that gossip and maybe pried loose of some real information...

Are there any WotC adventures out there that actually have traps anymore?

Well Felon, there is the CR1 "money" trap you fail to see everytime you purchase a WotC module  But the others are correct, the older modules always had at least one pit trap and one trapped treasure area. I think its gone away simple due to space needed for the creatures information...
