Stop Combining Words in RPGs! - Let English prevail

So, "greataxe" and "longsword" aren't valid words? Being non-native speaker, I learned from D&D that they are. O_o "Hey", I thought, "it must be that English people heavily used or encountered specifically long swords and great axes, thats why they have separate words for them." Gotta double...

    Organizing game material

I actually use a script-powered database which stores basic info for monsters, classes, spells and such. I can quickly find monsters by CR, HD, intelligence, races by modifiers and favorite classes and so on. But I managed to compile only a few of official books, so, I mostly rely on pure memory.

    White dragon illustration and stats

Aren't they? Then this must be my big failure. I think that white dragons are one of the most interesting of true dragons, and I was really disappointed with them in 4E (not crawling all over the place anymore %). Younger white dragons can: Set ambush, especially in snow or under the ice...

What do you do without balance?

I would replace "balance" with "meeting the expectations". You know, I had one game ruined because of gross mistake in rules text: the rules stated that each combatant can make an action in each phase after their init order (they really should've had one action each turn at their init phase)...

PHBII: big problem - druids lack healing at low levels!

I'm no expert, but looking like an animal should at least allow you to pretend to be an animal (in form of a Bluff or Nature check), which is "blending in", or give a bonus to Stealth in some cases due to natural camouflage, which is "scouting". Blending in is also helpful for scouting if the...

    Would racial power lists work?

I tried to make something like that for a gnoll (source thread), actually a whole gnoll class. These are 1st-level powers (not all selection, just what I did for my PC): At-wills: Ferocious Strike (reflavored fighter's Reaping Strike) Mad Bite: non-weapon, Str vs. AC, provokes AoO, 2d6+Str...

    Problems with pronunciation

To add more fun to the thread, French-style words like "bulette" are get -a ending when pronounced in Russian. So, the bulette becomes boo-LYET-tuh. And the tarrasque is pronounced as tuhr-RUHS-kuh (with hard Rs... well, you know the accent). The resulting word is both feminine and familiar (as...

    Problems with pronunciation

You bet! I couldn't convince my fellow roleplayers to say (and write in cyrillic) RAY-wen-loft instead of RUH-wen-loft (well, actually, "wen" part is pronounced as "weyn", similar to "yet", but a bit softer; still, that RUH kills me). I'd be thankful for a link to a resource about proper D&D...

    Game design

I can suggest one more step: once you establish a concept, it's useful to try to find a system that already does that. First, there might be no point in making another one, secondly, solutions used there can give you ideas and insight on problems.

    Home made game systems

In PDFs, I will be mentioned in thanks section of updated Familiars RPG, when it comes out. In videogames, I freelance for three years and has written full design documents for several small browser-based games and, full or partial, for three larger projects. One of them is coming up this...

    Home made game systems

Yo my homeland is so far, you had to design a game system to play an RPG. They wasn't sold or marketed, I only read about them in video gaming magazines %) My first and longest campaign lasted three years, was a solo-adventure, and, well, something with six classic attributes, but mostly...

    Mature content

Actually, "Animate Image" bard cantrip (or was it 1st level spell?) frequented charsheets of my group. It's very useful and creative spell for low-level adventures, fits bard and clever hero concepts very well (and isn't related to sex, unless you want it to). Really, it's so hard to find decent...

    Houseruling classes

I tinkered with it a bit more and... either forget the balance or I have to put a job-worth amount of effort to keep it. Losing hope here... I really wish there were some kind of resource (an article, a sourcebook or a website) for creating custom powers and classes. (Although when a real game...

    Mature content

Don't go pitchforks and torches on me, but Book of Erotic Fantasy is what brought me into D&D. Before it accidentally got in my paws, I thought that D&D is only about solving problems with force. "Slay that group of monster because <insert blunt reason here>" and stuff. BoEF showed me that how...

    Houseruling classes

A group can play with one book (in case of D&D - core three). And I'm really tasting it now, anyway %) I just got an idea: stick a different class feature on gnoll - get a gnoll of different role. Damage boost feature = striker, opponents hindering feature = defender and so on. With at least...

    Houseruling classes

Yeah, thought of that too, but I don't have PHB2 at hand (is it out already?). Don't have DDI subscription either, only PHB that I loaned from fellow DM. If I can't go with just core three, then the ratio of fun/price is too low for me. Had to leave WoW for the same reason :\ a TRPG shouldn't...

At-will class powers ruining my archetypes

I'm not an expert on 4E (quite otherwise, actually), but I've been following the thread for some time and got an idea. The problem is that magic doesn't feel magical when you can hurl it easier than shooting a gun, right? So, you can keep combat mechanics intact, but add some minor...
