    Fourth Edition just feels... incomplete

I'm not ready to associate the "unfinished" feeling of 4e to WotC nefarious deeds. "Never attribute to malice if it can be attributed to incompetence", if you will. But that pretty much leaves you with "The 4e designers are incompetent". If WotC is reading these threads and corrects some of...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

I was really quite excited about 4e. I'm not a huge fan of Vancian magic, but the massive spell selection and the raw power of the Mage made it worth it. So when WotC said they were switching to a Daily/Encounter power system I thought that was the right way to go. But by cutting the spell...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

    1) Reducing Cleric/Wizard spell selection. That was the fun part of being a caster; spending hours picking spells! B) Every Class is pigeonholed. e.g. All Wizards are Controllers. You can't make a Summoner, because you don't have the spells for it iii) The Subscription model. If you want new...

    Fourth Edition just feels... incomplete

Yep, whereas in 3e one could do these things from the PHB. Which is why 4e seems incomplete to me. Most of the characters I ever created were core rules only, since the 3e PHB had just about everything I need. So Now I'm just going to stick to 3e until WotC has had a year or two to print off...

    Fourth Edition just feels... incomplete

I too feel 4e is "incomplete". The OP summed up my feelings quite well. While I think some of the classes look a lot more fun to play than their 3e counterpart, like the Fighter. My favorite class, Wizard feels like an empty, hollow shell. The spell selection is so light compared to the core...

AOE Spells - 1 attack roll vs. All Targets?

Our games have been using spells saves as attack roles for a while now. We have 1 roll for every creature in the AoE. If the DM rolls well, he can crush the party horribly in one fell swoop since everyone effectively failed their save. A player rolling poorly when he has a limited number of...

    Beguilers - too powerful?

I see the beguiler as balanced, but only by wild swings of the pendulum. In other words, In some situations they are way too good, and in others they are just useless. Which is a difficult kind of class in any campaign, a DM needs to be on his toes to make sure he varies the encounters to make...

    Teleport hazardous or even impossible

I know this flies in the face of the rules, but my Big Bad Evil Guys traditionally mix the blood from human sacrifices in with the mortar on their castle walls. Preventing Teleportation. :-P A more rules-centric approach would be to look at the "Delay Teleportation" spells from Spell...

    Pointers To Polymorph

Yeah, no extra HP from a higher CON score bites. Which is one of the house rules our group came up with. We also established if you type did not change, you could still cast spells and use class features. No reason why a Wizard who polymorphs himself into an elf cant still cast spells, but...

    Pointers To Polymorph

I is my understanding that you use *almost* all of the PHB I rules for "Polymorph". The Polymorph subschool description has the line "Unless stated otherwise in the spell's description", so the only portions of the Polymorph subschool that apply to Polymorph are what the Polymorph spell do not...

    Pointers To Polymorph

Yes, WotC pretty much took out Polymorph. Which I'm still pissed about. The 3.5e PHB Polymorph is only broken if you DM does not know how to say "NO". Since you're DM did not ban the spell, just stick to a list of reasonable creatures and don't abuse the mechanic. Personally, I make my...

    D&D 4E 4e Multiclassing

You would think that since the books have gone to the printers, they would be a little more open about the details of the game. Multiclassing is a core mechanic to the game, and its not like it will stay a secret once the books hit the shelves. Their official policy of "We arn't telling you how...

    Immediate Spells

Is there an Eratta or FAQ that clarifies that one? I always assumed it was poor wording (like so many other spells out there). If you allow it to work against AoE attacks, its perfectly balanced and somewhat useful.

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

To bring this topic kicking and screaming back to Paizo and Pathfinder RPG, I'm pretty excited about it. Their decision to have an open playtest at least lets players see what changes are going in, and why. Designers make mistakes, but having 10,000 hardcore rules lawyers and munchkins...

    Grognards?

That pretty much sums up what 4e is to me (and probably a lot of other grognards). It just does not feel like D&D. Its a different game altogether.

Sooo, that's my players certain not to be subscribing to DDI...

I live about 120 miles from my core group of D&D playing friends. So I was pretty excited about the prospect of being able to play online with D&DI. Character Generator/Game Table/Rules Database is good stuff. However with their current scheme I don't think its worth the money, and I wont be...

    Hemispherical Wall of Ice

I guess the best way to resolve this would be to not draw a wall along the edges but through the square where it lands. Since the wall has a thickness is the radius of the Hemisphere measured by the inner diameter or outer diameter? Depending on which Interpretation you use, it would resolve...

    Hemispherical Wall of Ice

The radius of a Hemisphere of Ice is 3 feet + 1 foot per caster level So it might be a little tricky for a 7th level caster to get everyone to fit, but it gets easier at higher levels. I would say that the upper right and lower left diagrams provided by FrankTheDM are incorrect. The creatures...

What are your favorite RBDM tricks?

We let Bards use Energy Substitution (Sonic), but they still suck. I like to create NPCs that the players see as a trusted friend and ally, who then turns on them. After a few campaigns, the players don't trust anyone. On one occasion they killed paladins in their sleep, convinced they are...

Bad GM rulings? How would you rule?

Am I the only person who rules that Forcecage (not talking about wall of force) when in Windowless Cell mode blocks vision since the name implies its Windowless? So unlike Wall of Force, Resilient Sphere, or other spells, the Windowless Forcecage uses walls that are opaque.
