So how long have YOU been playing D&D?

As near as I can figure out, I played my first game in 1979. Our GM used a stapled copy of what was probably the first version of the rules (at least, it was pretty early - it had "hobbits" instead of halflings in it). By that time later versions were out - but none of us could afford to buy...

Which is better for tabletop-online? Klooge or Fantasy Grounds?

Has anyone tried GhostOrb? I believe their program resides on their server instead of being peer to peer, and it is supposed to have built in voice chat. Their website has been saying they are in Beta Testing with the final release "coming soon" for over a year now.

    D&D in the news...

Hail from another ex-Syracusan (haven't lived there since childhood though). If that gamer's buddies happen to come across this thread - my condolences, and may the rest of you get back home safe and sound. To Chuck aka Antikook - Does RWAG still do Rudicon???

cross platform voice chat for online games

I am testing an online tabletop-style game program. Is there any such thing as a peer to peer voice chat program that allows multiple people to talk to each other and also works cross platform? I know there is a lot out there for Windows, but we've got Windows, OSX, and Linux between us. I'd...

    boring dm

You may not like this idea, but it could be you. What is your "delivery" like? Do you sound boring? Or bored yourself? Do you tend to speak quietly, or in monotone? Some people can make everyone yawn when telling them they just won the lottery. Or it could be that your personality is just...

Are you a good Dungeon Master?

Sounds like your the type who's reach is always higher than their grasp - which is a good thing - and maybe a bit of a perfectionist too. You'r in good company. I've read about several great actors, authors, etc. who have the same attitude and the same reaction to their own efforts - seems to...

Mapping programs, Do you use them?

I generally only use mapping programs when I play online. But I usually sketch things out on a piece of paper beforehand. For tabletop I just use pencil and paper for my own notes and a copier for handouts, plus a piece of ereaseable white board laid on the table. I think it's faster and easier.

    "A ten-foot wide hallway stretches thirty feet and then . . ."

In the old days, miniatures weren't very widely used (I can remember using 10 army Risk pieces to represent player positions in the first games I played in), so the only way to play the game was for the GM to describe what the player saw, with an occasional drawing on scrap paper for the hard to...

    Whose Enjoyment Matters Most?

The players. I consider it my sacred duty as a Game Master to make sure my players are having fun playing in may campaign. It is also in my own best interest. If they don't have fun, they won't be playing in my game anymore, and then I won't have the fun of running my campaign!

What do you like best about being a GM?

OK, so there must be some reason that some of you run your own games instead of being players all the time. Is it the ability to create a "world" of your own? To make up campaigns with interesting plots and adventures? Being the chief Storyteller or Playwright? Being able to roleplay a lot...

Where do you get ideas for adventures?

Waaaay back in college I made up a compaign based on several songs from Blue Oyster Cult's "Secret Treaties" album (vinyl in those days) and a poem on the back of said album. Most of the time since then I have used mutated real world history (wars, revolutions, etc) as the basis for events in...

    Rystil Arden! Heeey!

I think one of 'em got too close to that wierd experiment in the Physics Department and keeps slipping into a parallel universe. But seriously guys, if you don't have a PnP games club, why not get off your duffs and start your own? Put up flyers with your phone number on it and see if you can...

We attacked the Gazebo...(and I need a gaming table)

I've never seen plans, per se, but I've seen descriptions of some neat stuff here and there. Not too long ago on this site (try clicking back a few pages) someone described a setup where they got a cheap electronic projector on ebay and hung it over the table to project maps for their minis to...

WOTC ad - insulting to gamers?

Yes, but the ad was obviously designed for use in other magazines aimed at online players, so I am assuming that it is/will be appearing those magazines also. Running it only in Dragon and Dungeon makes no sense at all, since like you said, it is aimed at a target audience that does not read...

WOTC ad - insulting to gamers?

I wouldn't say that I was personally offended by it, I was commenting on what I suspect is cluelessness on the part of WOTC's ad agency. They are using this ad to attract online gamers to the tabletop gaming, yet they are doing it in such a way as to offend a good many of them. Not very...

WOTC ad - insulting to gamers?

In this month's Dungeon magazine I spied a full page WOTC ad promoting D&D that I beleive is insulting to it's target audience, and probably gamers in general. I am referring to the ad on page 11, which shows a scruffy, half asleep looking guy staring at his computer monitor in a darkened room...
