Actually the Magic Item Compendium has a rule for fully identifying a magic item with a Spellcraft check against DC 25 + 1/2 caster level when casting detect magic. Check page 217 for this.

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds awfully mechanical and restricting somehow though, for a tabletop RPG. So I think I'm in favor of not having this in D&D. Of course, one could always ignore such a rule.

I'm amazed no one has yet mentioned the complete removal of the 5-ft.-step or the changes of charge to a standard action and withdraw to a move action. These, especially the 5-ft.step, will impact tactical combat quite a lot. In fact you might be able now to charge your opponent every round now...

Still, it doesn't seem to me to make sense to widen a Lightning Bolt, for example. Lightning Bolt has a range of 120 ft. and originates from the caster. Even if the Widen Spell feat doubles the length of the line, the spell still can't affect anything beyond its range, so this seems rather...
