Can you solve this mystery? (My players stay out!)

Looking at the letter frequency might help. http://deafandblind.com/word_frequency.htm

    Do you buy D&D Minis?

After the seventh Fiendish t-rex out of twelve opened boosters, I only buy singles now.

Tell us about your Alt-History game

I’m currently working on a game set in Rome in 54bc. It’s earth with a little magic (I wouldn’t call it low magic, because I’m not going to restrict the players on that end, it’s just that most NPCs at the start won’t see anything higher than 5-7th level.) I made a few changes to the timeline to...

World of Warcraft Collectible Minis Game announced

Mostly separate, a couple of friends and I split a case, and I bought the rest from a few FLGS in the area. Honestly the only time I’ve bought DDMs after that was a beholder from ebay. I use them for d&d, so the random thing was really annoying.

World of Warcraft Collectible Minis Game announced

That example looks like it would make a good orc end boss for a game. I might consider picking up a few if they were non-random and non-collectable. I got burned on DDM after buying 12 giants of legend boosters and getting seven Fiendish t-rexes.

What do they do with the copper and silver?

Near the end of my Spelljammer campaign I tested this. I converted all of the coinage in a horde into copper. They still took it all. This was a few hundred thousand GP in copper, at the bottom of a lake, and yet they took the time to collect every last coin. It wasn’t like they were poor or...

The Son of the Whiney Player thread

That’s a rather delicate situation. I would suggest you get your group together and discuss it with them. If the player is ruining the play experience for the rest of them it may be time to gently let him go from the group.

"Previously on..." - Recapping the previous session

I’ll usually start a session with “When we last left our intrepid adventurers...” followed by a brief description of what happened last session. It gets me in the mood to play and the players get time to get everything they need ready.

    GENCON 2008 - Who's Going?

Stayed there in ’06. It’s nice, and the walk doesn’t start to suck until the third night.

    Campaign Length

Longest campaign I’ve ever run was my spelljammer campaign. It went for about eighteen months, and the only reason it ended was because of a few players I couldn’t stand.

Can someone secretly record their bad gaming group?

D&D is fun to play, but painful to watch.

How do you handle starting equipment for a non-1st level character?

I usually start campaigns at level 2, so I give them what the wealth by level chart recommends with the caveat of “Don’t make me regret this.” If they’re bringing in a character at a higher level I’ll usually give them one level lower on the chart with the same caveat.

Your best fight vs. a Dragon.

My favorite quote from a dragon fight was between an Azer and an Ancient Red: Ancient Red: Why do you not tremble in fear like the others, little one? Azer: Because I’m immune to fire, and you’d be easier to kill from the inside.

    Projected map vs. terrain objects

I saw the Fat Dragon Games terrain at Gen Con. It’s nice because once you buy the pdf you can set up some pretty expansive dungeons on the cheap. (The caverns set is neat.)

D&D 4E How is the 4e announcement affecting your game groups?

All of the people in my gaming group (there are five of us) have pre-ordered the books because of a deal that the FLGS was running. We're planing on a playtest game when the books come out. I decided that unless I'm blown away by the rules I'll play 4e but I won't be running any 4e games myself...

The Player's Problem with 3rd Party Products

When I run games I’ll usually go with a policy of “You can use whatever from a WotC book. If it’s a 3rd party publisher let me look at it first. Don’t make me regret this.” A while ago I figured that if I couldn’t trust my players not to make the game an arms race then there was no point running...

3.X Zombies: How Can They Be More Of a Threat?

If I remember correctly one of the corpse crafter feats in LM made undead explode when they hit 0 hp in a negative energy burst that would harm the living and heal other undead around them. That would be pretty nasty if used en masse.

    Game Day re-hash

I had fun, but the group I was in was the lucky group. In the other group that was running at the same time the DM was using the stats off the mini cards for the encounters and not the stats out of the module. We found out when my group finished with all hands and the other group had one...

    Factotum's Gear

Personally I prefer utility items and things that will always have more than one application. If your character is going to be doing a lot of overland travel I suggest what my group calls the “donkey bag”. It’s in the MIC, I think it’s actually called the survival bag in the book. Basically it...
