    [June] What Are You Reading?

I'm 950 pages into The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I read Shirer's This is Berlin before, and I really like his voice. Not exactly an unbiased historian, but A: There ain't no such animal, and b: I think his bias is correct. I'm also midway through some awesome Pyle King Arthur stories. I...

Snow White and the Huntsman (spoilers)

I absolutely enjoyed it. It was so, so, D&D. The props were gorgeous, and I really liked seeing the archer fighting. The evil queen was awesome, and a lot of her stuff reminded me of old fantasy films - I'm thinking specifically of Prince Koura in The Golden Voyage of Sindbad played by the great...

    Silver Standard, Equipment and Masterwork

I just change all GP to SP. It's a cosmetic change that I and my players like. And it makes gold a big deal, which is fun.

Do people in your games actually use "builds"

I like to have a skeleton - a general idea of what I want to do mechanically with the character - but make most choices organically. I find that fun. Nothin' wrong with builds, though. Although having every choice mapped out level 1 to 30 is really, really odd.

Advice needed for Human only setting

This is not mechanical advice, but I highly recommend checking out Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles and Saxon Stories. They are absolutely packed with inspiration for this kind of world. I'm running a campaign like this, and it absolutely feels balanced and right. To bring in another...

    Alternate Accuracy Mechanics

You might be interested in Greg Stolze's In Spaaace! It uses tokens and a bidding system. Might be worth mining for ideas. And it's both totally hilarious and free.

My Perspective on the Paladin's Code of Conduct

You'll note, paradox, that the OP specifically said that this was for his specific game and was explicitly based on medieval Europe ;)

My Perspective on the Paladin's Code of Conduct

I dig it :) This kind of code would fit very well in the games I run.

What can I use instead of kobolds, goblins & orcs?

I'm having a lot of fun with beastmen. Human barbarian 2 with the claw and bite rage powers (handwaved a bit). They're fun and unexpected, and have great flavor. Players aren't sure if they're humans or monsters or what. The ambiguity also makes for interesting racial politics and moral dilemmas...

Pathfinder 1E Elements of magic, Mythic Earth and Pathfinder.

I haven't had an issue using EoM in Pathfinder essentially as written.

    Monster Apocalypse

Are you talking about how you need a starter pack for each player? Or do you really need more than that? I've been thinking about grabbing some of these a few paychecks from now.

My one criticism of 4th ed: poor artistic style

I'd be much happier with about 95% less glowing weapons...the visuals remind me of video games in a bad way.

    PHB2 sold out!

Meh. Some folks just like 3.X better. In fact, when 4E came out, I got the books, but it just reminded me how much I liked 3.5 and sent me back to it from Savage Worlds. Now, I'm running a little of each. I enjoy them all, and so do most of my players.

Forked Thread: Bought Savage Worlds, what should I know about it?

The main issues I have with SW are the lack of granularity compared to D&D (there are only 5 levels of skill, not counting edges, compared to 24) and the magic system. The magic just feels too... I don't know, restrictive? Yeah, restrictive. You only get a handful of spells and they're pretty...

Using 3.X skill system in SWSE?

I think I'm probably just going to let my players chop one or two skills in half, putting +3 in one and +2 in another.

Using 3.X skill system in SWSE?

I'm seriously liking Star Wars Saga Edition, but I really miss the ability to pop a couple skill points into little things your character should have a smattering of. More of an issue at low level, obviously, but I'm interested in finding a way to get the level of customizability that you have...

Real World History in (or influencing) your Game?

I've got a thinly disguised Peloponnesian War in spaaaaaace! in one of my games.

    That's an awesome vid!

What rule system am i looking for?

I like Savage Worlds a lot, and it sounds close to what you want. Plus, hey, complete core rules only $10. Can't beat it. SW isn't very simulationist, but it definitely allows for but does not assume handwaving. Yup Defense against melee attacks is 1/2 Fighting die +2, so you could allow...

So, what gaming gifts are you giving (or asking for)?

I bought all the 3.5 core books for a pal of mine, and I got Privateer Press's Infernal Contraption game and the Sabotage! expansion for my family (well, mostly for me).
