    Keeping Track of Rules Updates

And they're easier to stack up and set aside while in-game. And nobody's going to be sneaking peeks at their email during the game on their books -- if I start DMing a real live campaign again, instead of one-offs, I'm seriously considering a "no laptops at the table" rule. Even with the best...

    Combat actions before combat?

Amaroq, I agree with your reading of the "two groups at parley" situation, and the difference between a hostile parley vs. a planned betrayal at a peace treaty. I just have a question regarding a detail: what's wrong with Initiative number collisions? If A & B delay because they're waiting...

    Combat actions before combat?

Ah. This may be where a misunderstanding occurs -- I do not support the idea of *entering* Total Defense before a combat starts. There's nothing to defend against, before combat starts. I would allow a readying of total defense based on a specific trigger -- say, if the group with the volley...

    striker leader hybrid?

I've long had a thing for bards, so in my collection of made-but-unplayed characters there's a bard-rogue and a bard-warlock. I tended to build them more striker than leader just because I'm currently playing a leader & was therefore looking for variety, but power- feat- and skill-choice can...

    Combat actions before combat?

Surprise is a red herring with regards to the original question -- all surprise does, is determine who acts in the first round and how many actions they can take. If I may re-state the original topic, I would say: "What, if anything, in the rules supports a more intentional tactical situation...

    Star Paladin Hybrid

"You can wield the implements of both classes," says the hybrid rules. It does not extend to classes chosen via the multiclassing feat.

Thrown Weapon Seeker with nothing to throw...

short answer: Yes. We've been spending a lot of time in twisty little passages, except when we're inside the hallways of houses, so, yes, we're fighting our way out of corridors a lot. When all the players show up, the back 1 or 2 characters are more than 5 squares away from the action...

    Combat actions before combat?

That simplifies the case where there's a surprise round, at the expense of the case where there isn't one. If the opponents on the other side of the door were ready, the door opens and the characters just stand there until their turn in initiative. People ready actions because they want to...

Thrown Weapon Seeker with nothing to throw...

Wait, aren't daggers 5/10? My (oversized) party regularly gets into combat with those at the back of the party more than 5 squares away from the front. So I wouldn't be surprised to find a throwing seeker in between 5 and 10 squares away from a target, getting a range penalty. Also, extra...

Thrown Weapon Seeker with nothing to throw...

or just make do with Dwarven Weapon Proficiency, which comes with the race choice, and use throwing hammers, and use the feat for something else. To DracoSuave's earlier point, things like Lullabye Weapon are restricted to things that go thud (flail, hammer, mace, staff).

    Combat actions before combat?

I adjudicate this slightly differently. IMC, the fighter's action is "kicks down the door", the ranger readies her shot, and a third character can use total defense. I agree with Kingreaper that kicking down the door is an action & so is total defense, so it wouldn't make sense for the same...
