So my girlfriend wants to learn how to play D&D...

Lucky duck. I'd run something that's iconically D&D like Keep on the Borderlands or Ravenloft, but with C&C. That'll minimize the rules upfront then she can quickly transition into real D&D, but still get an iconic experience. That fixes the funky rules like updside down AC. I think that'd be a...

4E to Pathfinder - what is it like? What do you miss? Pleasant surprises?

To be clear I'm not talking about you or all the PF players...I'm one of em. There's just a vocal minority that keep comparing 4E to WOW or some kind of non-roleplaying game.

4E to Pathfinder - what is it like? What do you miss? Pleasant surprises?

That's probably more accurate. Any time 4E gets compared to a CRPG the underlying commentary is that roleplaying isn't allowed. I think it's pretty obvious how I feel about that accusation. So...this is a tangent but...dude, what system are you running? Everyone I know that's played those games...

4E to Pathfinder - what is it like? What do you miss? Pleasant surprises?

That was more a commentary on the edition wars than on PF/4E... It's sort of terrible and hilarious that it's gotten to the point where these kinds of statements could pass for a serious argument... Both games are groovy. I used to play a lot of 4E before I switched to PF, and it bugged the...

4E to Pathfinder - what is it like? What do you miss? Pleasant surprises?

Primarily PF gets away from the heavy WOW influences on 4E. For example: - Roles such as striker/controller are removed. Fighters can do more than hitting things and rogues can do more than DPS/backstabbing. - PF wizards get lots of cool spells like Fly and Invisibility. - WOW-style rituals are...

4E to Pathfinder - what is it like? What do you miss? Pleasant surprises?

After not really playing 3.5 for awhile I jumped into a level 7 game and was paralyzed by all of the rules at first. Definitely start at level 1 if at all possible. After playing a few games try to read the whole core book front to back once. Then the game should start to feel much easier. I...

4E Burnout - What to do next?

I have no idea what that product you linked to was. Look up C&C on Amazon and the first thing you'll hit is a PHB. When I started playing 2E in 1997, before we had cars and drivers licenses and hi-speed internet and printers for character sheets, we played with a 2E PHB, a 1E MM we bought from...

4E Burnout - What to do next?

Sounds like you're talking about Castles and Crusades. I can't recommend it highly enough. If you've ever played any D20 game (which obviously you have) there's no learning curve whatsoever.

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

Good answers. As a youngun we always used crazy crit tables from random products or our own invention in 2E. I distinctly remember racking up a lot more dead characters than any other period of my gaming. You could argue the con bonus negates this, but I guess if you don't have a con bonus the...

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

In the interest of making me a better and more informed DM and possibly sparing my PF players a TPK I'm curious what you think the deadlier elements are. Lots of 1E modules are full of instant-death effects. Low hit points mean more potential for swing and faster combats mean more combats and...

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

Short answer - an orc brute from the 2008 monster manual has 66 hit points and a healing surge mechanic. There's a bunch of ways to speed that up but if you shave off 2/3rds of the time it still feels slow to me. 4E encounters have to be designed in totally different ways. If you just have five...

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

See that's a very complex higher-level combat. I rarely saw a level 1 4E combat end in that amount of time. To be fair I did play with inexperienced players. I guess what frustrated me is you could never one-shot a non-minion monster.

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

If you quit playing in the 90s and want to pick up again at a place close to where you left off I can't recommend Castles and Crusades enough. Both Pathfinder and 4E are very different games from the D&D of the nineties. IMO D&D is basically split into three major families of games, being AD&D...

Is modular gameplay/edition intercompatibility possible without technology?

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Looking at the Past and the Future) Apparently they are that crazy. The reason you'd play this and not 3.5 is because you'd be able to get your 4E friend and 1E friend to sit down at the same table together. I think it's a...

    To Hell with Dungeons & Dragons ! ! !

I think that ship has sailed. If you recall the 3E Book of Vile Darkness discussed necrophilia and had a big scary warning label on the cover. Plus for 3E they reincorporated devils and demons, half-orcs, assassins, etc. etc. That was the early 2000s and I think all of that flew right under the...

    Economics of print-on-demand books

Ah, yes, it's hidden. Not on the front page. I had to google it. Book Cost Calculator Black and white is dramatically cheaper than color. Thanks guvnor.

    Economics of print-on-demand books

Sorry for posting such a basic and non-D&D question. I figured it comes up a lot around here, I can't get the numbers on the internet, and lots of people around here are probably curious. What would it cost to get an individual POD order of? 1) A 200 page black and white interior hardcover...

Pathfinder 1E is a big Pathfinder surge on the way?

I agree, but he's talking about buying. You're talking about playing. Take a good look at the WOTC release schedule. 4E products are over.

Is modular gameplay/edition intercompatibility possible without technology?

Didn't they say the 4E and Rules Compendium players could all do their thing at the table together? I think that was a quote...which suggests to me this isn't the direction they're going. I really hate the subscription model and emphasis on computers, but I'm not sure the community is screaming...
