D&D 5E Concentration while Short Resting

It seems not everyone agrees with what is intended or comprehended. A short or long rest is not just the passage of time. It's a game mechanic that players can use to regain resources. Just standing in one spot for an hour is not what gives a character back his resources that refresh on a...

D&D 5E Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

After thinking of darts as tiny spears or a bar room game for the longest time, I looked up some pictures of darts online. The ones that look like little throwing daggers would be the perfect fit for a throwing weapon expert.

D&D 5E Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

The pro/con for thrown weapons vs. ranged weapons is built into the weapon. With no feats you get more range and damage from a ranged weapon, but you have disadvantage in melee. The feat support is what the OP was talking about. Vax'il'don took sharpshooter and dual weilder for his dagger...

D&D 5E Concentration while Short Resting

Hex should be re-written to do more damage when used with a higher spell slot. It's a damage spell and not a class feature that should be 'always on'. The thing is, how can you tell the difference between a short rest (where you get resources back) and just not doing anything stressful for an...

D&D 5E Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

I was thinking about how best to accommodate a rogue player who wanted to use throwing weapons rather than a short bow/crossbow. The bow or crossbow are the best choice and the rogue wanting to be a sniper/assassin is supported by equipment and feats. I was thinking more along the lines of the...

D&D 5E Warlocks and Hex and the "daily morning short rest"

For me this was an easy interpretation. In my game recovering hit points (or other resources) during a rest takes meditation or sleep. I had set up this house rule to make quick wound recovery make more narative sense. That means that a short rest would break concentration at my table. Players...

D&D 5E Warlock as Intelligence caster?

In my game I've house ruled letting players pick Int, Chr, or Wisdom, as their casting stat no mater what class they've picked. I did not want to have a warlock or sorc being the charisma character of the party unless that's what they wanted. I even have a bard that wanted to be inteligence...

    Roll20 Hits 2 Million Users!

It's fairly easy. I converted the Lost Mines of Phandelver to teach myself how to DM on Roll 20 without too much trouble. I still would rather pay them $20 for their conversion than run my own version. Time and talent are things I don't mind paying for.

D&D 5E My group wants to access the cleric spells whenever the healer is absent from the session...

As long as you've adjusted the combat to account for the fact that a player is missing then you should stick with your 'the cleric is suffering from a bout of madness and can not cast spells' narrative. I've made the mistake of letting the rest of the players control the character of a missing...

D&D 5E Slightly confused about Curse of Strahd

If the players are ready for Strahd you could just let them fight him. If not, you can close off the ground floor entrances to the chapel so the party has to enter from upstairs. If the party has the sunsword and holy symbol, there is a good chance that Strahd won't be able to escape the...

D&D 5E Retrospectives on the Yawning Portal adventures

Thanks for the write-up! I've only DMd two of these, but I'm looking forward to seeing the 5E updates. I realy like the idea of the redrawn maps (like what we got with Ravenloft castle in CoS). I also hope they give us redrawn handouts that we can print out for the adventures that have them...

D&D 5E Trip to Barovia : starting CoS at lvl 8

Nice summary. I'm not sold on starting at level 9 unless it's a marathon session and it's easier to just level up once (or not at all). If the game was over several play sessions I would say start at level 6-8 (depending on player skill/optimization) and level 2 or three times.

D&D 5E Help me boost Strahd for 12th level PCs

I like the idea of having him wearing his animated armor and using a great sword. He was a great warrior before he became a vampire, so having him armored and riding a nightmare sounds like a fun fight. You can have the armor jump on him like an Iron Man suit and have rows of animated armor in...

D&D 5E Curse of Strahd - Need some rules lawyers

I would think it would be easy for the DM to only consider the vampire weakness to be to natural bodies of running water.

    D&D 5E A whole group with Darkvision!

I've changed low light vision in my game. I don't want humans and halflings holding the party back because they are stumbling around in the dark. I have low light vision give normal visibility in low light, but no vision in complete darkness. That way a goblin cave would at least have low light...

D&D 5E DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

There is nothing in the rules allowing invisible creatures to be immune to aoe attacks. If the aoe area includes the invisible creature he would roll his save the same as anyone else. Attack rolls against an invisible character have disadvantage, and they are considered to be 'heavily...

D&D 5E Why is WoTc still pushing AP's when the majority of gamers want something else?

I have a homebrew world that I've used since I started a new campaign for 4E when it first came out. I still like the AP style adventures and I own two of them. The western part of my main continent is very similar to the Sword Coast, so I can drop any published adventure into my game. For the...

D&D 5E Lost Mines: Map Size Shenannegins

I agree with the others who use a dry erase mat. I have a 34x48 Chessex battlemap that I keep on the table. I can draw rooms and erase them as needed while mapping is done on either a normal piece of graph paper or with a printed map that I reveal with sticky notes as they move. I also have a...

D&D 5E Sword Coast Legends: After the fall.

I'd like a D&D game that felt like D&D. I got Sword Coast Legends and at level 2 I was spending hours trying to compare my bags of magic items to figure out what ones to use. I'd rather see a game that translated the rules and feel of the actual RPG. I'd even be happy with an 8 bit graphics...

Alternate Rules for Hit Points and Lingering Damage

The Dungeon Master's Guide has an 'Injury' Table in Chapter 9. They also have healing and resting options as well. Some of the options are to just let the players use hit dice to recover HPs at the end of long rests, or to make a short rest 8 hours and a long rest 7 days. Another option is...
