What do the terms "Interaction", "Combat", and "Exploration"?

So, this is actually two questions. What do the following terms mean to Wizards (or, more specifically, Mike Mearls)? Interaction Combat Exploration What do these terms mean to you? Interaction Combat Exploration Also, claims backed by references are always preferred, though completely...

A really long honest post (would appreciate if you would also discuss my opinions)

As in Elric Melinbone, the Kinslayer?! Or do you mean the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse? There is a very good reason why it should be outside the normal rules to make characters like Elric, Gandalf, Gawain, Drizzt, Harry Dresden, Goku (DBZ), Ed (the emo guy from Twilight), James Bond...

A really long honest post (would appreciate if you would also discuss my opinions)

You ain't whistlin' Dixie. :-D I'm with you there. The Sorcerer in 3.X was too somewhat-wizard. The Sorcerer in 4e was initially too powerful, and depending on what build you chose, too specifically designed for a certain build, or too much random crap to keep track of with no real...

    D&D 4E Would you still play 4e?

This is the exact opposite of my experience. But then again, when I played 3.X we had access to all the splat. In our 4e games, we have restricted sources, which is much, much lighter of a load. If I was to go back to 3.x/Pathfinder, I would probably just get HeroForge (or something similar)...

    PCs vs. DMPCs

This is in large part a result of logistics. You think players going nova is a problem, try PVP nova. According to the RAI, PCs should be fighting 4 to 6 battles between extended rests. Each encounter is expected to consume 20% of the party's daily resources. An NPC should therefore be 20% of...

    D&D 4E Would you still play 4e?

DDi has no effect on me whatsoever. I gave up my subscription after 2 years, and it actually worked out for the best. We have frozen the rules at pre-Essentials, and as a result have avoided much of the bloat. Additionally, we limit sources to the hardbound books, and have so many house rules...

Presentaion of Spells: To Prose or Not To Prose?

Ah, I misunderstood. While I agree that there is much utility to be found from a condensed list of statblock style spells (say that while drunk) I would also like a cut-and-dry game mechanics description of what the spell does in the place where the spells are found. We should be able to have...

Presentaion of Spells: To Prose or Not To Prose?

I would prefer the spells be an appendix, unless they are all class specific. If they are class specific, go ahead and put them in that classes section of the book. For digital, OTOH, give the spells various tags and have a good engine for looking them up.

Presentaion of Spells: To Prose or Not To Prose?

Am I reading correctly that Sleep effected a circle (3+level) inches in diameter?! :-S That is a special area of effect.

Does Anyone Find the Encumbrance Amounts Unrealistic?

This actually is a very good demonstration of Encumberance Units or Points vs. mass. A Marine or Ranger is expected to not be slowed down by 150 lbs of gear, but that gear is arranged on their body in such a way to reduce the amount it encumbers them as they march/run/crawl/etc. If those same...

Does Anyone Find the Encumbrance Amounts Unrealistic?

I'd xp you, but I don't know how to do so from my phone. My group has been using Encumbrance Units since 3e was released. Two of us have quite a bit of knowledge of medieval weaponry, and the weight of things like swords and bows irked us. Then we decided that looking at the number as an...

Skill / Combat unification mechanic (please help refine)

Quick note, inherent bonuses are enhancement bonuses you automagically get at all levels ending in 2 & 7 for attacks and all levels ending in 4 & 9 for defenses. The current DC table is set up thus Easy = 8 + level/2 + (level-1)/20 Moderate can be calculated two ways Moderate ≈ 12 + level/2...

    D&D 4E 4e Character Log: Need Feedback

No problem. Use it all you want. As for load, it usually is something I just ignore until story relevant (ex: players must move statuary, to do so means slowed or they have to drop gear) but I know my players equipment and stats because all their character sheets are in Google docs for me to...

Skill / Combat unification mechanic (please help refine)

Okay, I want a unified mechanic between Skill Checks and Attacks. Partially, I’ll admit, I want this to simplify my cheat-sheet by reducing the number of tables needed. Another part is because some Skill Challenges I already run as quasi-combats. Players make checks against the chosen aspect...

Inherent bonuses: winners & losers, pros & cons

In my experience, this isn't really a problem. If you want that defensive bonus early, you can still buy +2 armor at level 6 (for example) and it just obsoletes at level 9 (IIRC) unless it has a cool power that makes it worth keeping. Inherent bonuses are really just a fix for the, IMO, flawed...

    D&D 4E 4e Character Log: Need Feedback

Hello and welcome. Now that the niceties are completed, lets start with a soul-crushing-critique of your precious invention. Not really, I'll leave soul crushing to John Steinbeck. But I do have some suggestions. Before we go there, though, I wonder if you are averse to having a laptop...

    Easy Paladin Poll

What about something along the lines of this... You have a number of selections of power+restriction. Let's call the aspects for now. Classes like the paladin can/must take a certain number of these. You could even break it into power sources, so a warlock may have to choose some Arcane Aspects...

    Easy Paladin Poll

My guff with an LG paladin has nothing to do with wanting power without restrictions. I want the class to be both more powerful and heavily restricted. My issue is the alignment system itself. It isn't nuanced enough. The BBEG rarely actually thinks of himself as evil. Someone can technically...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

So because the execution was sloppy the idea is to be universally dismissed? By that standard any edition of D&D other than [insert your edition] should have/will herald the doom of D&D. While I agree that the 14 binder set was, to put it mildly, a mess, I would contend that there are many...

    My thoughts on 'niche protection'

Ugh. This ended up really long, so I will sblock it reduce its consumption of thead real estate. Let's just get this out of the way. I wouldn't know how to cite Drizzt correctly or incorrectly. Hell, I had to look up how to spell the name. :p I used Drizzt a couple of posts prior to this one...
