    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

So it's less of an ice bridge and more of an ice boat.

Unfortunately the bridge can only be 10' long (only two non-instantaneous effects can be active at a time).

My favorite use of Mold Earth is against ranged attackers; you can spend a single action to make a 5 feet pit for an ally to hide in it. Crouching in the 5 feet pit provides full cover, and prevents all projectiles and most spells from reaching the target. The DM might rule that a particularly...

    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

Just the flavoring of food. Flavoring poison to make it undetectable would be an amazing. The issue is that there is no mention in the books of poisons having a taste. Giving the high price of ingested poison (150+ gp per dose), I think it's reasonable to assume poisons do not have a strong...

    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

Me too! I've read people rave about it, and I thought it would be a lot more popular. I've not sure what you mean by "people seem to think it can do all sorts of things the spell doesn't actually say it can do". My understanding is that it allows you to take your normal adventuring day soil and...

    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

I guess we have a fundamental difference in opinion on how discourse ought to proceed. I personally am a firm proponent of Hegelian Dialectics as a way to reach truth and deeper understanding. Essentially, I believe that it is healthy for a thesis ("prestidigitation is a great cantrip because...

    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

I did more than that. I raised four points: food & drinks are often glossed over in D&D flavoring your food has little/no mechanical benefits a free workaround exists to get a similar effect for most adventurers, it goes against the RP

    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

I never understood this mentality. Eating and drinking are activities that are typically ignored or glossed over in D&D. So odds are, you won't even get to say that you are using the Prestidigitation cantrip to flavor your food. Even if food & drinks come up, I don't quite see the appeal in...

It's great when there is a Wood Elf in the group, to better take advantage of Mask of the Wild. Do you know other ways to take advantage of being able to predict the weather?

I just realized I forgot to add Control Flames... My bad! I've added it now. Feel free to change your vote if you think Control Flames is among the best :)

I want to like Friends, but the 1 minute duration is just so short. You barely have time to interact with the target, much less getting away before the effect expires. True, and can be especially valuable for initiative rolls. I still think of it as mostly of an utility cantrip, though.

    D&D 5E [POLL] Best non-combat cantrips

Which utility cantrips do you believe are the best in D&D 5e? Near everyone agrees Guidance and Minor Illusion are at the top, but what about the rest? Hence the goal of this poll. Please select the non-combat cantrip(s) you believe are the best in 5e. Note that I've excluded combat cantrips...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I do agree Hypnotic Gaze is very good, but I couldn't help but disagree with two of your points: The description of Magic Resistance states that it works against "magical effects". The description of Hypnotic Gaze states that it "magically enthralls" another creature. So unfortunately...

WotC Considering NPC Stat Format Change

People need to keep in mind that WotC does not write primarily with DMs in mind. WotC is writing for all the people who buy an adventure book, read it for pleasure, and then never run the adventure. From what I seen from other DM buddies a good 80% of books are never run - they are simply read...

D&D 5E The New Class Tiers

Every other class gets stronger but the Cleric stays roughly the same. Hence why the Cleric drops in rank.

D&D 5E The New Class Tiers

Heroes Feast is pretty good, I admit. But the rest is niche. I mean, how often are you going to cast Word of Recall, Plane Shift & Ressurection, realistically? Word of Recall & Plane Shift do roughly the same thing, teleport you away from trouble. And Revivify & Raise Dead are typically all...

D&D 5E The New Class Tiers

Cleric goes down by a lot at tier 3 (level 11-16). Clerics do not get a single class or subclass feature at these levels, except for a slight CR increase to "Destroy Undead". Clerics also have by far the worst spell list at these levels. Every other class gets cool stuff - even Ranger gets...

D&D 5E The New Class Tiers

Don't forget Dissonant Whispers (by far the best single-target damage spell at tier 1). At level 1-4, Find Familiar is probably the only Wizard exclusive spell that's actually powerful. The rest are mostly defensive spells. They work great for higher level Wizards, but they are a prohibitive...
