Why does ENWorld hate Burning Wheel?

One on one doesn't have enough beliefs? Wow. The GM can constantly challenge you, and every roll you make is important to just your character. With more players the spotlight passes more, so you need to work a little bit more as a group (although BW doesn't seem to handle a traditional "party"...

Why does ENWorld hate Burning Wheel?

My one critique of Burning Wheel is that it does not work with larger groups. I am currently in a group with 6 players and a GM, we could not run a Burning Wheel game. Even Luke Crane says on the BW forums running a game that size is not playing BW, it's something else.

Why does ENWorld hate Burning Wheel?

I think FATE books do a good job of this. At least Dresden Files does a nice job, FATE Core is pretty solid. But yeah, most rpg books assume you already know how to play. They are rule books, not instruction manuals. Burning Wheel has like 74 page of rules, then "okay, next up is character...

Why does ENWorld hate Burning Wheel?

I own Burning Wheel Revised, Magic Burner, Monster Burner, Adventure Burner, and two copies of BW Gold. It is my most favorite system. I also get warm tingly feelings with Mouse Guard. The best campaign I ever ran was Burning Wheel, almost all of my best role playing moments come from Burning...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Disclosure, I started with 4e. My very first role playing game was 4e right before college. At college I was plunged into 3.5 before learning about loads of available systems and trying to increase my exposure. For me it's these three: 1) Class Roles. I loved the idea of building a coherent...

Setting & System Suggestions: Modern Vietnam War + Fantasy?

Savage Worlds weird wars can provide a lot of ground to start using here. Basic soldier group, then add in all sorts of stuff. They take out a group of Viet-Cong, but they rise up as zombies (savage worlds zombies can run/shoot/fight; not slow shamblers from Romero films). Now what? Or, just...

Pathfinder 1E two bards in a party... yeah (advice) how would you deal with it.

If you are using Pathfinder I would have them use archetypes. The Court bard is very debuff focused. While making enemies miss more is not the same as making your guys hit, using both together would be a nice combination- no stacking issues. Then drop the stacking rule. The game doesn't let...

Human Interest Story at Battle of Hoth

Glad to see you're getting so much out of the game! FATE is a pretty sweet game, it's really easy to let the players run rampant and create the situation for you.

    Starship Bridge Battles

In my experience ship combat stuff works in a really abstracted manner. Or something like a skill challenge. The pilot tries to avoid damage, navigator is trying to find a way to get out of the situation, gunners are working on fighting off the enemy. They either make rolls to aid each other...

Should I let my character be instantly killed?

I'm not familiar with the system being used but if the PC is out of commission while the rest of the party go on a side quest to save him, you can let the player run some monsters or maybe the BBEG in a confrontation. If the game allows rewards like bennies, fate points, or something else, you...

Seeking commentary on a house rule

I mean narrative as in stories in a novel. If this was a novel and Fireball worked that way, cool. Wizards would be less precise and would likely only use area effect spells before their allies entered melee (like how grenades aren't often used with friendlies in the blast radius). Wizards...

Design Your Own Miniatures With Heroforge!

A player in my group got a mini shipped recently. It looked good, but I thought the bust on the mini was ridiculous, although based on what the player said, that was more him than the site. I am disappointed that some things are missing, like anything remotely reptilian. I was really hoping to...

Seeking commentary on a house rule

I like this idea. But more as a narrative element than a game mechanic, reading about this in something like Dresden Files or Harry Potter seems fine. But as a player? This would just aggravate me. Besides, simply because I don't have the knowledge or skills to accurately place the bead for a...

Human Interest Story at Battle of Hoth

RobShanti You can also try more forced choices to increase emotional impacts. I was given that advice a while ago when I was running a sky pirates campaign. Giving the players the narrative control helps make it that every decision has a cost. For example, PCs are moving through the evacuated...

Human Interest Story at Battle of Hoth

Other ideas: -Owe a debt, perhaps the PCs were former smugglers or otherwise ran with bad company and they still owe a debt. Now with everyone fleeing, there is much being left behind. If the PCs can make it the armory (or other location as per players or GM choice) they can scavenge enough to...

Human Interest Story at Battle of Hoth

Soldiers often fight for their buddies next to them, not for their country. Sure the country/cause is being served; but when bullet (lasers) fly, you lay down covering fire or advance so that your buddies live. Soldiers during shield walls covered the guy next to them also. It was important to...

    Fantasy with no magic

I'm a little confused, what do you need to "poof" and just happen? In the no magic games I've run, the lack of "well, a wizard did it" was one of my favorite parts. Many literature adventures with magic are still relatively low/no magic. Conan the Barbarian- other than some spirits and the mad...

    Campaign world idea... Flipped coin

To help with some of the light issues, have the sun orbit the coin near the edges. This would effectively put the equator in a ring near the edges of the plane. The dark side would have some light at the edges, but it would be perpetually dusk at the best of conditions. The plant life would...

    Kraken Trouble

I'm not sure the arms can be targeted separately. They can be sundered, but the touch AC refers to the whole kraken. Attacking a tentacle or arm without a sunder attempt would just damage the whole kraken with 290 HP. Without sundering it would be like trying to slice the arm off a human, the...
