D&D 5E D&D 5e Basic Set: Things that make you go "what?!"

But...but...LEGOLAS.:p It's worth noting that most range weapons have some requirement in terms of physical space and movement, too. Drawing the bow back, keeping the sling moving, holding the...atl-atl...hmm, moving on. My point being is that in close combat, it's easier for your opponent to...

D&D 5E What does this photo say to you? [Project: Morningstar)

Quite a few things, really. Everyone having the D&D Compendium or SRD at their fingertips and all the books as PDFs without taking up the entire table is a net benefit for us. Not having half of my players with their laptops is another. Things like 3D virtual tabletops, chat clients and even...

D&D 5E Pages from the PHB

I think everyone is missing the important thing, here, in that there is a table that requires you to roll percentile dice to get a result in a D&D book once again. This makes 12 year-old me (reading the magic item entries in the AD&D DMG) SO. HAPPY.

    D&D 5E Upcoming OGL-Related Announcement!

My interpretation is rather the opposite of any SRD-like application. I think this article is Mike Mearls saying that fan content production will be in a safe harbor (i.e. no shades of late 90s TSR sending threatening e-mails to websites for putting up web pages with custom monster stats or new...

    D&D 5E Buying Adventures

While I'm not criticizing your choice of poll numbers, I have to agree that 11+ is pretty low for many posters here because, if nothing else of our sheer age in the hobby. I've been playing D&D since 1979 or thereabouts. 11 modules in 35 years isn't really all that much, especially if you add...

D&D 5E 5e launches with two adventures - designed by Kobold Press

I'm curious about this. I remember playing through 'Keep' and don't recall it being anything other than kind of uninspired. We did consider one of the encounters to be way unhinged for a beginning group (as it threatened a TPK for a 2nd-level party, essentially), but otherwise I don't recall...

    D&D 5E The cost of D&D 5E (it ain't so bad!)

I think we need to make sure to be careful with our terms, since 'Basic' is FREE, while the Starter Set is what I think people mean when they are talking about a cost product. Unless you both are referring to the number 0, which is both 8x times and 3x the price at the same time. Tricky math!

D&D 5E Why I'm Buying the Starter Set

Tweets from Mike Mearls this afternoon: So clearly the character creation rules or something will be available from day one outside of the books themselves. Fascinating.

D&D 5E Why I'm Buying the Starter Set

That's....that wasn't what I was expecting. Will this just have preset characters? Are they offering a free online character creator? That raises a lot more questions than it answers, IMHO.

D&D 5E 5e launches with two adventures - designed by Kobold Press

Technically they've outsourced most of their output to freelancers for years. The real issue for me was that 4E forced most authors to conform to a format that really wasn't appealing to me as a DM. Many of the modules presented in Dungeon since it went digital have been....lackluster. My...

    D&D 5E The cost of D&D 5E (it ain't so bad!)

It's quite likely that no one going to Amazon.com is going to pay $49.95, either. It's very likely that places like comic books/game stores will offer their regulars a 10% discount, if past is prologue. As for purchasing for one's kids? I merely need point you to the cost of any AAA video...

    D&D 5E The cost of D&D 5E (it ain't so bad!)

Correct: in 1977 the PHB could be had for $10, the MM was the same. The DMG was $15 when it came out in 1979. Correcting for inflation, that makes the DMG cost in 2014 dollars....$48.98. :hmm: The 2E AD&D book were $20 in 1987 which, when corrected for inflation is worth $41 in 2014. 3.0 PHB...

    D&D 5E The cost of D&D 5E (it ain't so bad!)

I think $150 is more expensive than what I was expecting. But I don't think it is tremendously unreasonable and I already KNOW I will spend that money. It should be noted, of course, that my entertainment budget is fairly large. I am a forty-something married father of two teenagers. I am...

What's a good fantasy mapping program?

There's no question CC3 has a steep learning curve, but there are some very good tutorials available to get you going. Their annuals also come with lots of PDFs which walk you through reproducing many of the maps using their new styles. I have to disagree that you can't produce something in...

    D&D 4E The 4E Rakshasa...a little plain?

I totally missed that sidebar, but that's partly because I was using the statblocks in the module and merely cracked the manual to see if I'd missed something. That's very helpful, thanks. I also didn't realize that theya re effectively immortal unless you do something (again, in over 30 years...

    D&D 4E The 4E Rakshasa...a little plain?

I like the trait idea. That allows me to craft something on a rakshasa by rakshasa basis. The party has already determined that their target is, in fact, a rakshasa in disguise. With the help of some npcs, they have lured him I to a trap and are about to engage him in combat. The party...

    D&D 4E The 4E Rakshasa...a little plain?

So, I've been running the 4E adventure "The Art of Deception" from Dungeon #217. I think it's a cracking good adventure, quite honestly I consider it the best adventure I've run under 4E for my group, as it doesn't feel like a fixed carnival ride, but offers the players a lot of freedom to...

    D&D 5E Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Oh, I'm afraid I'm going to have to side with Halivar on this one. :)

    D&D 5E Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Not that D&D Next needs such a thing, but what is the basis for a supposition that a D&D movie would not be a financial success? Such things are always anticipated as a failure until they actually succeed, then history gets rewritten and it was a fait accompli. Jackson's Rings Trilogy was...
