    Do you feel the substitution needs to be explicitly magical? Or could it be knowledge/study based? Personally given that the mage/apprentice feats are about knowledge and it’s studying I feel this to be reasonable.

    I’m assuming you mean proficiency? It will depend, sometimes it will specify artisans tools, in that case no, other times it will just say tools. Is there a specific rules interaction you’re looking at? That aside, I don’t think many people would be bothered by making the swap if you ask first.

    That is true, i wanted to focus on yes, which can make it very important as to when you take a level in a class, you may find yourself in a position where you can a new maneuver degree but no new manuevers essentially pushing that gain back a level.
