    Getting around in Planescape

How do PCs find portals while they are in Sigil? 1) Being a member of a Faction is a major boon. A faction usually has portals to their affiliated planes under guard. Also, some, like the Guvners and Sensates, know the locations of several other portals as a matter of course. 2) High-up men...

    Summon Monster spells.......yawn....

I love the variants in UA for summoning. Particularly, I love the idea of summoning a particular creature when you cast the spell. Especially when you gain access to spells that allow you to travel to other planes, you can give magic items to the creature so it can use them when you summon it.

Spell Components - Do You Need A Free Hand?

Now comes the real question: Since you need a free hand, are you going to start ruling that your party cleric can't cast his spells as long as his mace is in one hand and his light/heavy shield is in the other?

What is your fave alien race?

Nearly any of the creatures from Call of Cthulhu are great aliens; from alien planets, times, or dimensions. Predators and Aliens are cool, as long as you disregard the movie AvP. They, as well as the Thing, can be found in d20 versions here. oh, and Farscape had some really cool aliens

Who do you consider an Anti-Hero in fiction?

Although he eventually becomes a true hero in the later books, Roland Deschain is definately an antihero in the first couple Dark Tower books by Stephen King. He is completely self centered, a bully, engages in kidnapping, and has no compunctions about killing innocent men, women and children.

[DMs] How much time do you spend preparing the game from one session to the next?

6-10 hours. I typically spend my breaks at work brainstorming about the next session, then the day before I hunker down for several hours to set my ideas in some semblence of order and stat out my encounters. My prep time would probably by cut in half if I wasn't obsessive about having...

    Am I an atypical DM?

Yeah, I had a player who did that constantly as well. Come to find out, he was using it to confuse me so that he could cheat and add in extra pluses :( I was always too busy DMing to notice, but my wife happened to notice it. She told me after the session what she'd witnessed. Then in the...

    Tripped up over cleave

I play it that tripping an opponent doesn't meet the definition of "dropping an opponent" given in the cleave feat. Cleave specifically states you need to "deal a creature enough damage to make it drop". Tripping in and of itself does not deal any damage.

DMing: How do I setup philosophical in-character discussions?

On the topic of creating debate, most of my in-character philosphical debate is brought on whenever the PCs have to spend alot of time with a particular NPC. For instance, if your characters are escorting someone, or protecting someone, there isn't always action. There is alot of time spent...

What pre-3E D&D book are you using most in your 3.X game?

All things Planescape! Since 3.x came out, i've run 3 different Planescape campaigns. The material was just so good; light on crunch, heavy on fluff. Unlike alot of stuff out there, particular the WotC 3.x stuff, the old Planescape books were just fun to read.

    Polymorph House Rule

My house rule is: The first time you wish to wildshape, polymorph, or shapechange or create an illusion of a particular type of creature, you must succeed a Knowledge check (DC 15 + creature's HD) to successfully take the form of that creature. The type of Knowledge check required depends...

Proper Pronunciation of all D&D words!

The proper pronunciation of Sigil, City of Doors, was provided in the original boxed set, page 4 of Sigil and Beyond in the flavor text quote. It is pronounced with a "g" sound.

Problem with Player's not taking adequate Notes

As far as your players keeping track of their equipment, hit points, etc., I once had that problem. I solved the equipment problem by using index cards. Whenever the PCs picked up an item, I handed them a blank index card and had them write down the item on it. As far as writing down hit...

Do you DM sitting or standing?

When I sit, I sit in a higher chair than the other players. I sit during most NPC conversations and when the players are talking amonst themselves for strategy/planning/etc. I stand during combats because I like to pantomime the actions and reactions of NPCs while they are fighting.
