D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

It does vary in degree a great deal from story to story and based on the setting. A story like Tower of the Elephant might not have any clear signs of it. As opposed to all the Solomon Kane stories set in "darkest Africa", which are inundated with it.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yes, dude, we get it. You will argue your opinion interminably around in circles no matter the opposing evidence. And for innumerable posts after saying one was your final word on the subject.

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

This is non-responsive to his question, which was about Conan.

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

It's understandable. If you didn't already know the history, the vast distance between how the FR "was designed from the start" and how it looks now wouldn't be obvious. Whether we're talking about the very beginning, when it was a playground for Ed's childhood stories and then for his D&D...

    D&D 1E Old module question.

As Jester said, L2 is a murder mystery. Quite a lot of the detail about the Baron's court and castle provided in L1 seems like it was intended to be useful for and to set up L2. L1 is a classic module which gets a lot of love because it provides a starting town in very similar detail to T1 The...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Nice. We did tour Schonbrunn with the group, so we didn't entirely disregard palaces. I'm jealous on that military history museum though.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

When my ex-wife and I took a tour of Bohemia we had a relatively long day in Vienna, with lots of free time to wander and do stuff. We decided that our activities would include not just trying sausages and Viennese coffee and dessert across from the symphony hall, and having a little picnic in...

OSR Minimalist Paladin and Ranger rules for B/X aka Old School Essentials

This was the first version I ever encountered, since I started with BECMI. :) I do rather like the concept of Lawful fighters being able to BECOME Paladins after getting some experience under their belts, if they devote themselves to it. This is kind of how it worked for Holger Carlsen (from...

D&D 5E Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

In my last old school dungeon crawl game I used a more limited version of it. The caster would sort of astrally project from their body Dr. Strange-style, at a "flying" speed of 60' round, and was quasi-invisible (some particularly perceptive or magical creatures could see them). While...

D&D General The Original Reason for Spell Components: Balancing Bad Jokes

To my recollection these are all old vaudeville stage comedy gags.

D&D General The Original Reason for Spell Components: Balancing Bad Jokes

I've wondered if this might be a reference both to steel and to painting swords white or white-ish so they appear to glow or shine brightly in stage plays or old Hollywood movies using pre-digital effects. I figured it was a reference to alka-seltzer, and its predecessor bromo-seltzer.

Shadowdark Arcane Library Western Reaches KS

This is sweet. It reminds me of a B/X Goblin class I saw on someone's blog which had a prerequisite something like "no starting stats over 9", but was a cool concept with some really fun abilities. It seemed to be an excellent consolation prize for a below-average set of stats which might...

D&D 5E Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

I feel like the OP answers or anticipated most of your questions. Maybe a re-read?

    Old School Essentials

What Aldarc said. B/X took over from AD&D as the most popular TSR version in the OSR some years ago, and OSE (originally named B/X Essentials) has become the most popular form of it because of its super clean and user-friendly layout and organization (as well as its ongoing series of...

D&D 5E Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

I'm generally a fan of the OSR approach of making traps more obvious. So they're less "gotcha!" and more "how do we deal with this thing?" and problem-solving. Mage Hand definitely can throw a wrinkle into that.

    Ernie Gygax Has Passed Away

RIP Ernie and condolences to his family. I'm glad he got to spent so much time enjoying his passions and sharing his enthusiasm with others. All of us make mistakes. My impression of Ernie's is that his were not malicious.
