D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

I have said before that, using their current formatting -- of only substantial hardcovers and box sets -- I think six major products a year (plus 1 or 2 extras, like starter sets and non-game books) or one every two months, is the sweet-spot. It is enough to make chronic buyers happy-ish, but...

D&D 5E Check Out Planescape's Table of Contents & More!

I haven't purchased any D&D books in over two years (or played in about four), but this one has my interested piqued.

D&D 5E Poll: How do you feel about 5e pace of releases?

Assuming you're going on yearly average, that would be correct imo, although, again, it depends upon what you are counting and if you are considering page count (as you discussed up-thread). For instance, by my accounting, 1E peaked in 1985 with 18 print game products - but only two of those...

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Good point. I tend to be (or err) more like your dad, though recognize that it has, well, practical problems. But as you and others have pointed out, it isn't a binary, either all business ("the bottom line above all else") or all art ("never sell out, man"). The trick is finding the right balance.

    D&D (2024) So what's with 2024 and beyond?

I've been out of the loop for awhile, but it seems like we don't know anything more about 2024 than we did a year or so ago. Still three core rulebooks, right? What about the "classic setting revisited?" And what happened to the new setting(s) that were mentioned awhile back? I see a Vecna...

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

I hear what you are saying, but the thing is that from the perspective of the suits at Hasbro, there isn't a problem: What they're doing is working in the way that the want it to work - maximizing profits, and doing so in a way without a huge amount of overhead (i.e. a huge staff of designers...

D&D General Should ENworld Posters Design a D&D?

I like your basics. A few things to throw into the mix. To start, as others have said, it is a project doomed to fail due to too many cooks in the kitchen. I think a better approach is "Zardnaar's D&D, with consultation with EN World." Then others can do the same, if they want. Or if you're...

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

I agree with your overall point -- it is obvious -- but am curious why you put 2018 as "peak 5E." First of all, I'm not sure what these "7 other products" are (dice sets?) or why they figure into your calculation. If anything, the make 5E's output seem larger than it actually is (i.e. removing...

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

I didn't read all 20 pages, so forgive me if my upcoming point has already been made. But consider two possibilities... You can sell 200K copies each of 5 books for $50 each = $50 million or... You can sell 50K copies each of 40 books for $25 each = $50 million You make the same revenue, but...

    Wish I could delete this.

Prediction: this thread will outlive us all. When the apocalypse finally comes, this thread will be going strong because it, like The Dude, abides.

No, I know his back-story I just don't know what is meant by the "boycott list."

Louis CK's latest special is very good, as always. If you saw the live stream a couple months back, it is mostly the same material - that was a bit disappointing.

Streaming Services: First 2023 POWER RANKINGS (And what's up with Prime?)

It has been weeks since I've even opened Netflix...I keep it for my daughters, and I suppose I should browse to see if there's anything new, but haven't been inspired. Oh, and to watch the occasional Seinfeld episode. Actually, the same with HBO Max, Apple TV, and the other big names. I find...

D&D (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

I skimmed the first two pages, but not the previous four. It sounds to me like they're stating the obvious: You can intermix 2014 and 2014 classes, with the quiet part unspoken: But it is entirely up to you, your DM, and table agreements. I don't know what world people live in in which there's...

I wasn't making a point, but asking a question, which you answered in the second part, so thanks.

D&D 5E Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Good question and I have no idea. I don't think slavery itself has played an especially prominent role in fantasy literature, historically speaking. But it may have increased in recent years, perhaps due to the rise of a few elements: "grimdark" fantasy, dystopian teen lit, and socio-cultural...
