A lot of people seem to love it, but the people who do love it seem to be the ones looking to replicate an OSR-style "simple, gritty, and deadly" type game. That may or may not be what the OP is looking for.

The module tells the DM to "Roll dice behind the screen and frown.” That is meant to imply to the players that the monster succeeded on some kind of secret saving throw, suggesting that it might fail on a future attempt (even with the same roll from the players). Still, if the module writers...

In that video, it's blatantly obvious to everyone in the room, including the kid, that the people in charge are interfering. The advice in the module is supposed to make it look like a legit miss. What I'm hearing from you is that it is the fact that the advice expects the DM to hide the truth...

Isn't it basically just the same as Legendary Resistance? Is it the inability to make the item work on the first hit that bothers you, or the fact that the module instructs DMs to hide what they're doing?

There's always (IMO) been a healthy amount of Robin Hood mixed in with the Ranger archetype, and he certainly has roguish tendencies.

On the other hand, it can't report until it gets back, as it doesn't have the "see through your familiar's eyes" telepathic link. You also have to speak to it verbally or at least in whispers, which could interfere with trying to stay hidden.

Such a great setting. I understand why it's never been updated--and yes, a lot of it is system-agnostic--but I'm still bummed that it's dormant, if only because it deserves to be better known.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I think I've decided to treat the teapot as a magic item (with charges) and will balance it by giving similarly powerful magic items to other party members. Someone pointed me to this resource, which will also be handy...

Didn't the original Starter Set come with pregen characters? I don't have mine handy right now, but I could swear it did. Or do you just think the ones from the Essentials Kit were better?
