    D&D 5E (2014) Tired of doing WotC's job

I'm confused... if "can my character buy a cloak?" is a pointless question, why do you want it answered in an official capacity?

    D&D 5E (2014) Tired of doing WotC's job

I thought this thread was going to be about buying a WotC adventure book and then having to effectively do the work of writing it to actually make it work for your group and being tired of that... or even feeling like you've had to write a bunch of your own races, classes, feats and such because...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

It has been my experience that a person that can make a new character in a reasonable amount of time relative to the objective level of complication the system puts into creating characters is a rarity. The "typical" player will look at a variety of options, carefully weigh them, and even if "in...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

I've seen the "just change the name and play the same character over again" thing happen a few times over the years. The instances all fall into 3 cases: 1) The campaign begins, and a string of die rolls going as badly as they can means someone's character is dead. Instead of sitting out of...

Which Online Virtual Tabletop Do You Use?

There is a video on youtube in which someone runs through the setup of the warhammer ruleset, and is very informative of what the VTT can do. Let's see if I can link it: vid

D&D 5E (2014) In your Years of Gaming, How many Psionic Characters did you See played

While it is likely true that the percentage of gamers who remember Dark Sun is shrinking, that doesn't necessarily mean the percentage of gamers who would be interested in a 5th edition version of Dark Sun is smaller now than it was previously - given that nostalgia isn't the only reason to be...

D&D 5E (2014) In your Years of Gaming, How many Psionic Characters did you See played

In my experience the reasons people treat someone not liking psionics like "kicking a puppy" comes down to the phrasing. Nobody really cares what your preference is, but they do care if you are saying a thing they like isn't just not your taste but is "terrible" as if your opinion is objective fact.

D&D 5E (2014) In your Years of Gaming, How many Psionic Characters did you See played

Putting together a book cost time and money, and that means a book has to hit a particular sales level to be worth what was put into making it. It is a recent change of policy, being only since 5th edition's launch, but WotC no longer feels it to be worth it to put out books they believe will...

Which Online Virtual Tabletop Do You Use?

I recently switched from astral tabletop, which is what I switched to after a couple years of using Roll20 begrudgingly, to FoundryVTT. It's technically still in a pre-release state, but it is easily the best virtual table-top experience I've ever had. I can do as much with it as I did with...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

I dunno, my ability to explain a position I do not hold falls short at that point. Personally, I have no difficulty seeing two characters with identical mechanical choices as not being the same if their personalities aren't the same (a skill I practiced while DMing by having a group of monsters...

D&D 5E (2014) In your Years of Gaming, How many Psionic Characters did you See played

I can't say the exact number because even my crazy lil brain didn't manage to count them all... but I've seen more psionic characters at my table over the years than I've seen bards and druids combined.

    D&Detox

I agree that it's not the statistically typical situation... but it does happen to be the most common situation when it has come to me learning a new game. There's only 1 game out of the dozens I've learned over the years that I didn't learn by reading it on my own and then teaching it to a...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

That's why I mentioned build in my earlier post. Not every wizard would be "the same" but every INT/DEX wizard build would be.

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Usually people are meaning that if someone plays a [race + class + build] combo more than once using point buy, the ability scores are going to come out the same - or at least are encouraged to come out the same because you can choose where to put the points and certain configurations provide...

    D&Detox

I have never experienced it taking more than "This game is not like D&D, so play will be different, but I will gladly help you learn as we go." just like I've never had it take more than that to teach someone D&D (or any other game) in the first place.

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

"your character is dead and never coming back" hasn't been a default caused-by-the-rules detail in a long time, so it's still very odd to try and treat that as an analog to "didn't roll good enough stats to play a paladin"

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

The tier of play a campaign reaches is not "a roll of the dice" by design.

D&D General Is Healing Magic Painful?

I know a lot of players that would never cast that based on the mechanics, and a lot more that would never cast it again if they ever rolled less on the 3d8 than they did on the 1d10.

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

The difference, judging from the post you quoted, is choice. In AD&D a player says "I want to play a paladin" and the DM says "I want you to play a paladin too, but let's follow the rules - go ahead and roll your ability scores." And then those dice rolls can say "no" to the paladin getting...
