    D&D 5E (2014) Mearl's Book Design Philosophy

I'm agreeing with @JeffB too. 5e so far is, IMO the most catering toward nostalgia and taking only the most financially safe steps edition. I think, but it could be just my personal bias, that this quote is his justification and rationalization for not making setting and lore books. If you...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

@pemerton: so, your baseline is: don't like the current state of D&D? Go and play something else. I'll humor you and say, largely I already did that! :) However, I like 5e, i liked the settings, i liked the novels. D&D had many things i loved. So IMO it is perfectly okay to discuss and yes, even...

PF's success was due to a very specific historical situation. I agree that with 5e, they're facing hard times. Still, i hope they'll work out something. PF 2 could be as good as any other rpg. They has significant fanbase, if the product is good, it will sell. Probably not as much as the 1e with...

hawkeyefan, I understand your view on the topic and I'm happy we have a fairly civil conversation here with you and others. :) I could see the merits in what you wrote, definitely, I just on the side that if there's will, there's a way.

I suspect they will either focus on Starfinder, or do a PF 2e at some point, which has it's own problems. But I hope they'll manage to keep the company afloat too! It'd be sad to lose them. Yes, and? A couple hardcovers and pdfs is still more support than nothing. I'd be happy if we'd get as...

I didn't suggest that Paizo sells as many books as WotC, I just think it's not as clear-cut as drawing conclusions based on simply amazon ratings. Also, as it got discussed many times, 5e has many advantages, such as easier to learn and a much greater name recognition. Also, the zeitgeist pretty...

I could relate to that, because sincerely, as much as i like their products and how they are willing to give full support for the RPG line, there's indeed a thing as too much crunch. However, my biggest problem is the fluff/crunch ratio in their books. In Horror Adventures, I'd like to see more...

Ah, I see. Please let me bring in a personal example! :) I was a martial arts instructor a few years earlier (for various reasons I'd have to take a break) and one of the biggest struggles i had as a beginner instructor was learning not to overload my students with information. There's...

I'm not confuting that Paizo is a smaller company, that makes less money, because that's certainly the case now. However, citing only Amazon numbers is a bit misleading, since D&D books are far cheaper on Amazon and also, WotC doesn't have their own webshop and distributing channel, but Paizo...

Okay, I respect your feelings and reasons, but please let me ask a question! What is exactly the reason of being intimidated by more books? If you are a new player, or Gm, there's the beginner box and the core books for you. I was a new gamer for a lot of games and there always were products...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

I wrote it on the SKT thread. For a setting book, neither is enough. The adventure + a 64 page supplement about the connected locations and NPCs that didn't get a significant role, thus word count in the adventure would be much better. IMO Paizo's model is just better. Also, Putting the setting...

Might be that, but if we will get something like CoS, then nothing, but unofficial DMsG material... that's still not real support in my eyes. I agree they probably want to do, for example a Planescape adventure at some point in the not so distant future. I just hope they won't butchering up that...

You said yourself, these are not AL legal, so by default they aren't official. Widely accepted by the community as good != official. "Sorta official" is not an existing term, IMO. AL modules are official, because WotC acknowledged them as. Official/canon = acknowledged legally by WotC...

Exactly! The part that matters isn't that WotC staff writes them. It's that they are providing guidelines and overseeing them. Consistency and officialdom. The AL materiel is considered as official.

We really gone through that already a few pages above. If something isn't official license, well, it isn't official. The reason of making something official, or "canon" should i say is to provide a common ground which could be used to produce supplements building on it and even novels. My...

I'd have zero problems if they'd officially outsource their settings for 3rd parties like they did with 3e RL. But I said that a couple times too. Don't want to do RL? License it to Onyx Path! Spelljammer is too niche? Let's see if Kobold Press would want to pick it up! You could find reasons to...

So, they could do a 250+ pages adventure every half a year and numerous AL adventures, but can't a, let's say 32 or 64 pages supplemental pdf for CoS about the wider Ravenloft, or about the parts of the North not discussed in SKT in length? Sorry, won't buy it. Moreover "prioritization" and lack...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Storm King's Thunder a flop . . ? Still early yet but doesn't look that good.

One of them is the retelling of one of the most iconic, most successful adventures and riding on the vampire heyday wave. The other is about drow and underdark, which are also one of the most iconic and belowed parts od D&D/FR. I'm not saying they're bad adventures, because mostly not, but there...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Storm King's Thunder a flop . . ? Still early yet but doesn't look that good.

I think it suffers from the jack of all trades, master of none problem. For an adventure, it's not enough and have story problems. For a setting book it's also not enough and could be better organized. SKT + a 64 page pdf/booklet supplement about the parts of the north not closely relevant...

It highly depends on what kind of books do you want to see. As far as I'm concerned, no, they absolutely didn't find a happy medium, because they didn't find a way so far to put out material that's not just FR and not APs. I'd wait to see how VGtM will turn out and the "big mechanical...
