Does anyone know why they chose to develop this project for 5e vs. their DCC ruleset?

Basic Role Playing. It's the main driver of Chaosium games. Roll low, d100 for skills and combat.

You really can run monsters like normal if you want to; it's not a super-crunchy system and doesn't take much work to change it. Chaosium has a ton of stuff out there to help you.

I suspect no one would have clicked on the article--me included--if the lede was "Venerable D&D Game Changes Stealth Roll, Adds Feats." Actually...I probably would have. I am pathetic.

If you are used to playing 5e and the...let's say vigorous characters, you'll find this game very humbling as a player.

This "news story" is now being spread in other outlets: Fox News, the Boston Globe, etc. It's all just a giant echo chamber.

I've played it about 10 times, I guess, and I really like it. It has BRP DNA, so my group and I are quite familiar with the mechanics. We play on Roll20, where the game is fully supported, so that's fun. What my players don't like is the monster mechanic (i.e. automatic hits for monsters)...

I believe you. NYT is a big fish in the American media, though. Pretty cool for TTRPGers.

My original thought was, wow! D&D on the (virtual) front page of New York Times! We’ve come a long way since the early 80s is when I first learned to play!

Isn't he one of the original players/designers? If there is more to this issue, I am unaware of it.

Yeah, we all tend to prefer a lower-powered fantasy with a grimdark vibe. I think I said somewhere in this thread, the Free League LotR game is great: it has the 5e mechanics, but the power gaming stuff is sanded off. Of course, PC magic is sanded off,too, so...🤷‍♂️

As a guy who is reading through a lot of Middle Earth RPG content, I found it helpful to see a story set in Tolkien's Gave me some good ideas.

Thoughts? I liked it very much. I am not a huge fan of Japanese animation, generally, but the story was excellent.
