    MichaelSomething's 4E Comeback special

Sounds like too much work for a character I might not keep for that long so I'll find another feat. Might just decide to give the Psion a shot later on, to keep the Controller Train going.

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

I see! I feel like the Infusion System still has a ton of design space to explore. The Artificer is still very conventional but it would have been cool that instead of a spell book or whatever, whenever the Artificer learns a new spell they have to put it into an item to be able to then...

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

That's what I was thinking, but only 1 infusion active at a time feels too limiting. The Artificer's known infusion to infused item progression goes 4/2, 6/3, 8/4, 10/5, 12/6. I think this guy could go 3/2, 5/3, 7/4, 9/5 and then end there. It would give you a little bit of flexibility early on...

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

Can you actually do that? the Steel Panther isn't a simple or martial weapon and it's not a spell casting focus? Can it hold one of those? Honestly feels like something the Artificer should be able to do earlier than 11... Heck, maybe that's how ALL their spellcasting should have been: store...

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

Yeah a lot of the Artificer class features are super cool and they feel like a cool take on the concept. My biggest issue with the Artificer is that I don't feel like they really need that whole half-caster+ progression. And the way they can just change their spell list is really bizarre.

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

All three are functional subclasses but they all have issues. The Arcane Archer feels undercooked: you only ever have 2 uses of your magic arrows so you might limit yourself to one use per combat, so you often don't feel very magical until 7th level, and you run into the Battlemaster Maneuver...

I'd basically take the opportunity to come up with new infusions.

I'd like to add infusions that are consumables. Items you use, get an effect for 10 min and then can't activate without infusing again. Yeah, I suggested basically taking a Battlemaster approach but with Infusions instead of maneuvers. Maybe take the opportunity to add some home-brewed infusions.

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

Another thing of note is that Artificer still doesn't quite feel like a 'core' D&D class, and I think tying it's flavour to another class through a MC style subclass could do a lot to making it feel more 'mainstream' of a class. Fighter and Rogue are probably the most likely to match well...

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

They can work but I'd rather not be using a class with spell slots Really, the idea was born out of the image of a Fighter taking his level 1 sword and upgrading it or customizing it over time, rather than being able to do EVERYTHING an Artificer can do.

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

I think it's clear the Artificer would be a WAY cooler class without slot-based spell casting. EDIT: Also: subclass name 'Combat Magineer'

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

Frankly, I don't remember. I think my point is "People say the Gish fans just want an OP character but nobody say anything when the Ranger saunters on the scene and that guy mixes weapon with Magic".

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

That wouldn't be a bad take on the Eldritch Knight, sure, but I was looking more for a tinker/alchemist Fighter than a spell caster Fighter. The Artificer has GREAT Cantrips for a Fighter subclass, though. I'd give up the spell slots to just do infusions at level 3. Ideally, I think a good...

What if I MC into PSION instead? It would let me grab the Heal skill... This would let me grab this as a Utility. God knows we'd need it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

Mechanically it would end up with a spell-less Artificer, I don't think they would create a class where you need a fully stocked and equipped forge to work your class features. That was basically my idea with the consumable user, but trying to make more unique effects so they're not just the...

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

in 4e you could use INT for AC and that unlocked a lot of hybrid and MC potentials. I've seen things weirder than Batman

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

Weird we never got a Oath of the Arcane Secrets or something to add Arcana to a Paladin. Give the guy access to Rituals to make him more Wizardy and let him use one of the Weapon at-wills (and explicitly make them compatible with smites).

    D&D 5E (2014) Artificer Fighter subclass? [+]

So, one thing we have in 5e are subclass that act as a type of multiclass option on their own. The Eldritch Knight is a Fighter with a bit of Wizard in it, the Scout is a Rogue with a little Ranger, the College of Blades is a Bard with a bit of Fighter and so on. Some are even MC with classes...
