D&D General What is appropriate Ranger Magic

Me too. And I miss the little bonuses they granted wizards in 3e. Having a hedgehog granted an armour class boost, a cat gave a boost to stealth, I think a pig gave boost to diplomacy? That was fun. It meant something if your familiar or animal companion got killed. Now you can just resummon...

Bow Down To His Majesty The Worm

Just told my husband I'd really like this game under the Christmas tree this year. Thanks for the review!

Spoilers Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

I was looking forward to this as a fun adventure show. It was disappointing and I just couldn't engage with it.

    [Gumshoe] Shires Out

Could be a very relaxing gaming session. Cakes, tea... Oh and a dead body. 😏

And Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan is an awesome game designer/writer.

    Starting new Brindlewood Bay campaign

Last night's session went well. As I mentioned, I started off the campaign with All Hallow's Scream from the mysteries in the core book. The players had a lot of fun interacting with the quirky characters at the Hallowe'en party and exploring the shlocky mansion of retired B movie...

    Starting new Brindlewood Bay campaign

I'll be running a new Brindlewood Bay campaign this weekend. I have 3 players and they made their Murder Mavens last week. We have: Opal: elderly Goth girl with Dale Cooper move and painting hobby. She's a little bit Addams Family. Violet: cookbook author with Columbo move and the baking...

D&D 5E (2024) The New Custom Backgrounds Details

Because new players and GMs might not realize that players creating their own background features are an option at all. Since D&D is most people's first game, I want the book to encourage as much player creativity as possible. Customizing in 2014 was often ignored because the option was buried...

D&D 5E (2024) The New Custom Backgrounds Details

I can easily see a new player not wanting even more spells. A bard may not want even more ways to inspire and even more instrument proficiencies. Yes, they might, but lots of players won't want their background features being more of what they already do. And the way the book is organized...

D&D 5E (2024) The New Custom Backgrounds Details

I might be wrong, but I remember Crawford stating the background playtest rated very high and would not need tinkering. I'm thinking the loss of customizable backgrounds as a player option is a later decision that came without playtest feedback.

D&D 5E (2024) The New Custom Backgrounds Details

I prefer the UA playtest where the backgrounds were examples but players were free to create their own. Yes, I know this can be easily done at tables that prefer it. WotC should be encouraging player creativity, however. The current backgrounds are all mundane and will mostly be chosen for...

Five Big Takeaways from the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

We manage. Everyone keeps notes(some better than others). If there's a contradiction, we don't sweat it too much, since it probably wasn't remembered in the first place. The campaign is more zeroed in on party. I think of it as Tolkien vs. Peter S. Beagle world building Both are cool and work...

Five Big Takeaways from the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

I find it's less work. You build as you go and it's not all on the GM's shoulders. Maybe start with small village, some adventure sites nearby, add more locations when the party travels. Add a big city, nearby countries, maybe ocean travel, etc. Follow the players' interests and encourage player...

Five Big Takeaways from the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Yep. I start with a small area, some interesting hooks, players continue to add things as well, and the world unfolds. I used campaign settings in the past but starting with minimal prep, and no real setting besides some very bare bones did not actually feel any less real. We are just as...
