In 5e, leaping in aggressively is often the smart choice. There is an expectation that encounters are balanced. 5e has more safety nets with healing and moving away from lingering consequences. This is why many (not all) players struggle when they switch to an old school game.

I love SD. Definitely not discounted grognard, as I never liked D&D much, back in the day. It's not really grimdark edge stuff, and is actually focused more on exploration over meat grinder. It can be very dangerous, but smart, careful play alleviates much of its reputation for "disposable"...

I tried that one too. It fizzled, even after I cut out the long lessons and mini training missions from the "know it all" NPC. I like a lot of Paizo adventures. Not this one, sadly.

And it's pretty amusing when enemy spellcasters fail their spell rolls and can't cast their favourite spell. They suffer backlash too on critical fails.

Only played a little Dragonbane but definitely want to play more. It's a great game. We've been playing Fabula Ultima. Love the character creation. And it's fun just leaning into the tropes without worrying that it's too clichéd.
