I like that idea! That would be a step in the right direction for slowing down the zero to hero effect. It would be a hard sell, but it's the right way to go.

It's really all about the wording. I'm sure someone can come up with an alternative to "sub" that won't bother people so much. Personally, I don't care either way.

Having pact boons as invocations feels thematically weird to me, and weakens the warlock because you now have to expend an invocation "slot" to get it. But I guess it was easier to include them as invocations rather than come up with three new ones.

I'm a visual person. Theatre of the mind is challenging for me, but I know that it makes things easier for the DM.

In terms of the setting, it might help to add depth by specifying what type of crystals are present rather than just having everything look like generic quartz. E.g. mountains of malachite, rivers of azurite, etc. - "The BBEG's eyes were as black schorl, his sword, the dull grey of magnetite...

IMO, the biggest issue is that zero to hero happens to quickly, and that the monsters (as written) don't scale well with PC power at the higher levels.

No, I won't be purchasing any WoTC products. No books, no subscriptions, no microtransactions.

Ultimately it doesn't matter. For a substantial percentage of the RPG players, D&D is the one and only (RPG) game that they would ever consider playing. So, unless WoTC's implements changes that make the game completely unplayable and unfun, people will just grumble about what they don't like...
