D&D General Are You Ready For A "New" D&D?

I'm happy with the game as it stands. I want as few structural changes as possible in the next iteration--I want the feeling of an invigorating refresh, but with all the promised continuity to keep my 5E collection relevant (three-qurters of which I have yet to run). I want it all.

D&D General Talking about Stepping Away from D&D?

I suspect you're reluctant to frame this as burnout, because if one of your players suggested switching to a non-WotC system, you'd jump at it. Despite your fears, the best option (and really, this should just be stickied at the top of every D&D forum) is honesty.

D&D 5E (2014) Which easier to remember (for you)? (On Saving Throws & Spell Durations)

Much easier to require a saving throw. No player is going to forget that roll.

D&D 5E (2014) So, I figured out why 5e's encounter building is broken(and how to fix it)

It took me half-a-dozen sessions to realise that the default guidelines were pitched at one difficulty level too low for my players. When you also realise that the encounter guidelines are a starting point for encounter design, not an ending point (the game has too many unknowables for any...

D&D General How serious are your D&D games?

D&D, for me, is getting around the table and laughing with friends. That said, I want my campaigns with hindsight to feel like they touched on serious themes. There's room for both in any long-running game, IMO.

WotC What is the last WotC adventure you played in or DM'd?

I ran much of Ghosts of Saltmarsh during lockdown, but since returning to the table I've continued with my homebrew. Previous to that, in between homebrew I've run Phandelver, Princes, and several Yawning Portal adventures.

D&D General Are You Seriously Planning to Stop Playing and/or Running D&D Over The Recent OGL Developments?

Not even close. I have huge amounts of time and joy vested in my current campaign. No other system does it for us. I can say with certainty that at no point in the last 22 years has anyone at my table said, "Well sure, I'll play D&D, but only so long as Wizards never changes the terms of the OGL."

Critical Role Could Critical Role launch their own RPG?

Part of CR's appeal must surely be the ease and familiarity of the rules. That's the reason they moved from Pathfinder in the first place. I for one would lose some interest in the show if they started playing a rules-set that I wasn't playing regularly. (I can say for sure that I never would...

D&D 5E (2014) Have You Started Planning How You Will End 5e Yet?

It's possible that my campaign finale and the new edition will align quite well--assuming no TPK's on one side or delays on the other. That said, none of us feels a strong need to flip to the new edition just because it has been released. It's all a little far away to plan, tbh.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 2022 Overview - Did you purchase any of the books?

Spelljammer and Stormwreck Isle, and I'll probably buy the Dragonlance deluxe when it arrives which is why I didn't purchase Dragon Queen. I've also bought bits and pieces of various books on DNDB as ther need arose.

D&D General XP Awards for -- what????

I've given up on evertthing except milestone XP. I'm considering a different approach for a hex crawl my players want me to run, but that's about the only scenario I would want to use incremental XP awards. I prefer flat awards at the table. I don't like Inspiration dice (unless group, not...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

Musk's takeover of Twitter is a model, all right, but of what not to do, or even imagine doing. I'm struggling to think of an OP I have ever disagreed with more.

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Default Playstyle of 5E "Monty Haul?"

How experienced are your players? I agree that the default assumptions of 5E make for a relatively easy time of it, but a bunch of new players coming in at 3rd level are going to get their butts kicked by a 7th level encounter.

WotC Is Mike Mearls still in WotC?

According to his Twitter he is "D&D franchise creative director". That said it seems he hasn't tweeted anything for a couple of years and wikipedia reckons he isn't part of the D&D team any more.

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 3 Discussion (SPOILERS)

Whatever the outcome, I was riveted to both those episodes (as was my wife who, although a regular player of D&D, has until now shown no interest in Critical Role or RPG streams in general).

    D&D 5E (2014) How do you time your level-ups?

We're using milestone XP and levelling up occurs after a Long Rest. We sometimes do it at the table, sometimes between sessions. It's up to the players. Edit: I love one of the lines from that linked play report. "I'm exactly dead."

D&D General When Was Your Last D&D Gaming Session?

We did a full Sunday a couple of weeks ago (it was awesome) but life has got in the way of our weekly game since then. We're back around the table on Thursday night.

D&D General Maps in adventures: Top-down or Isometric

I love an intricate isometric map (see original DL modules for many fine examples), but I'll take a top-down version for pure usability.
