How Fantastical Do You Like Your Fantasy World?

For many years, nay decades, my concept of the perfect D&D setting was Middle Earth. I'd point people to that and then the Peter Jackson films. Middle Earth with a few more monsters perhaps. I was always of the view that the best setting was very medieval with some fantastical elements. Cities...

    D&D 5E (2024) Specifying 5e

I prefer 5.5 but since everyone else says 2014 or 2015 I go with that.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

I only do encounters I want the party to have. If they are high enough level and passing through the goblin forests, I'll either gloss over any potential fights or they just don't encounter anything.

D&D 5E (2024) "No magic items are necessary" vs Magic Items Awarded by Level

I don't really pay attention to the recommended number. If I'm running a module, I'll give what the module gives and if I'm writing my own, then I use the random treasure method from the DMG. Simples.

Describe your last rpg session in 5 words

D&D 2024, Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign. Derelict ship. Terrifying sea monster!

    An examination of player agency

I think player agency has a variety of perceived meanings. I've had known players in the past who felt that it meant that whatever they wanted to create as a character, providing it was was from an official TSR/WotC book was acceptable regardless of DM wishes because it came from an official...

D&D General Every Tavern should be a franchise!

Probably not what you are looking for but the closet I come to this is that every campaign will have a Black Lobster tavern that the party will visit at some point. They may be different cities or countries, or even completely different campaign settings but there will always be a Black Lobster...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

I've never much liked the sandbox/open world play style. As a player I get bored, or more accurately I get lost. I much prefer to have a story that I can follow and learn as I go. It's just how I prefer to play. As a Dungeon Master, I was brought into the hobby and raised (as it were) with the...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Assuming it won't spoil anything for anyone on here, but what is the hook they never pursue?

    Let's Talk About Short Campaigns

Not opposed to the idea of a short campaign but I will say that my preference would be to play a full 1st to 20th if possible.

D&D 5E (2014) Advantage when two allies are in melee with the same enemy?

Going into 2024 edition I wasn't going to use it as learning a new system I wanted to learn the rules proper first. However, both groups I DM for are accustomed to the old flanking rules and wanted to keep them. They don't feel that it takes anything away significantly from anything else and...

D&D 5E (2024) What Licensed IP Do You Want For 5E?

I wouldn't mind who did it so long as they made a decent product or better yet, product line out of it.

How do you like to handle dungeon mapping?

As DM, I draw the map, at least the areas they can see on a battle map. I hate map drawing as a player and it was something I ditched as DM, back in 2nd edition. Players never got it right and time was wasted around the map making corrections, and I'd rather just get on with the game.

D&D 5E (2024) What Licensed IP Do You Want For 5E?

League of Legends, or more specifically, Arcane. I know someone started a 5E setting and you can find the PDF online with a google search but it was never finished or expanded.

What Do YOU Want The Future of TTRPGs To Look Like?

Personally, I'd like to see it stay face to face at the tabletop as the default for the game. D&D is THE name brand and will most likely remain the gateway game. However, as long as the hobby continues to grow and draw in new players that is all that matters.

D&D General To multiclass or not to multiclass

Under 2024, I am not sure I see a point to multiclassing mechanically. If it helps build a concept you want then, yeah, go for it. In my current campaign only one player has multi-classed. He is now Monk 4/Ranger 1. He took Ranger specifically for the mechanical benefit of Hunter's Mark and no...

What Mundane Details Are Important In Your Fantastical Game/World?

For me, probably a calendar with with holy days and lunar cycles is important. For some reason my players like to track such things. Otherwise, bar a few areas, it needs to look what we imagine a fantasy medieval world looks like, so that includes architecture, fashions/clothes, the food people...

    D&D 5E (2024) What is compatible with 2024?

Yeah. Compatible wasn't the right word. I'm only looking at official WotC options here. I say compatible because at the time the books came out I read a fair few articles and posts, and watched a few Youtube videos that made a point of saying that although a lot of 2014 material was fine, there...

    D&D 5E (2024) What is compatible with 2024?

Thanks. Subclasses are the main thing I've been looking at. Just wanted to make sure before I add anything in.

    D&D 5E (2024) What is compatible with 2024?

As I have said numerus times, my group and I are coming back to D&D with the new 2024 version of the rules. So far I have kept it to just material from the new version because I read a fair bit about how a lot of 2014 material wasn't fully compatible or balanced with 2024. I'd like to add some...
