Jason Carl on White Wolf's Return, Mage: The Ascension Plans

V5 set it up so the player characters are all members of the same coterie who have some sort of common goal. Their coterie might be devoted to gathering artifacts, engage in human trafficking to procure specific types of blood for other kindred, enforcers for the prince, etc., etc. You could...

Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

I decided to go with a Holstein look for my Zombicide Blood Bull.

Where’s The Deathstalker RPG? Part 1

Not even the 80s synth soundtrack? I'd just stick it in Savage Worlds and be done with it.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I don't know how I'm going to find purpose in a post-NuTSR world.

Jason Carl on White Wolf's Return, Mage: The Ascension Plans

Prior to V5, I hadn't played Vampire since 2nd edition sometime during the Clinton administration. While I like the general setting, with the clans and various factions, I didn't really keep up with any of the lore, so I don't really care about those kinds of changes. With V5, I really prefer...

    New D&D Video Game Announced

I would not want to be the studio that tries to follow up on Baldur's Gate 3.

Games you need to go outside your normal group to play

I've wanted to give a long term campaign like that a shot except break it up into different seasons. Like play the campaign arc for a few months, then play something else, return to the campaign, take a break, lather, rinse, and repeat. Another idea I've toyed with for the better part of 25...

Games you need to go outside your normal group to play

I can understand that. I picked up RuneQuest on the cheap last year, but before I even finished reading it I knew I wasn't interested in running it unless everyone was up to speed on the lore. I've run into some problems with L5R with players who really didn't have an understanding for the...

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

Falling off is just a natural part of life. No matter whether we're talking about games, bands, television shows, or even empires, even the biggest and the best of them will fall off eventually. I imagine there are many young people in the United States today who have never seen an episode of...

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

West End Games had the Star Wars line from 1987 through 1999, during which they produced two different editions of the game (three if you count the revised & expanded rules) and more than 100 sourcebooks, adventures, and supplements which is an astonishing number. If it wasn't a successful game...

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

In 2000, John Wick released a game called Orkworld. From the beginning, Orkworld was designed to be a single book with a limited production run. No additional books. No reprints. It's done. As far as I know, Wick made a profit. He met his goal and made money which seems like a success to...

Where’s The Deathstalker RPG? Part 1

Excalibur certainly counts as a fantasy movie. I still remember the scene where Mordred and his orcish minions attack Perceval and hang him on that tree.

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

This thread is supposed to be about successful games not dead games. We have an entire other thread devoted to what makes a game dead. We should probably take the conversation there.

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

It's interesting because the introduction of PDFs have made it possible to purchase all sort of games. It's easier for me to get my hands on Oriental Adventures for AD&D today than it was in 1990. I should amend my definition to be games which no longer have new material published for it...

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

It's the only definition that works. All the others are far too fluffy. Clap! Clap if you believe in Cyborg Commando! See? It's not dead! It loves, so long as cybernetic warriors fighting alien bugs live in our hearts.

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

Dead to me means the game is no longer in publication. I don't care if people play it. If we go by that standard, there's no way to truly determine if a game is dead because we don't know for sure whether someone is playing it.

Where’s The Deathstalker RPG? Part 1

I don't remember Krull being a particularly good movie. I pretty much have zero warm and fuzzies towards it myself.

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

It’s possible for a successful product to die. WEG’s Star Wars was quite successful so far as I can tell, yet it is dead, dead, dead.

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

You can’t use the likes of Beyoncé or Queen as your standard for a successful musical. I prefer a somewhat objective definition. If the game made a profit then it was successful.
