DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

There are some great suggestions earlier in the thread, but I'll add my own experiences. I do a number of things that tend to reduce the lethality of the game while still keeping things dramatic. Non-lethal combat. First, I try to introduce early on that combat isn't always about killing...

Would it be possible to get the following thread stickied? http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?630139-Catalog-of-Official-Unofficial-D-amp-D-Setting-Fan-sites Thanks!

Cool. I couldn't really tell, as text conveys nuance poorly. I agree. I'm going to post in meta to see if the mods can sticky this thread.

Thanks! I think it's probably best in the long run if we can all support every setting community, even the ones that are struggling or new.

Check out the Astral Deadnought from Mordenkainen's Tome

I have to admit, the Easley cover for MotP did more to fire my imagination than just about any image in the game. Simply amazing, and I'm really happy to see that the dreadnaught continues to terrorize astral travelers. I agree with earlier posters that the abilities are just flat-out cool and...

    [conversion woes] SO MANY ITEMS

Yeah, earlier modules were kind of like loot piñatas. I think it went hand in hand with things like gray oozes, black puddings, and making item saving throws when you fail a save. I'm still playing 3rd edition, but I've gotten in the habit of tossing out a lot of the treasure when I do...

Bump. Still looking for some sites for a few settings, like Al-Qadim and Birthright. I don't know if they exist or not.

Yeah, I would support that. Thanks, those are great additions!

    awkward situation

The duergar are slavers. If they had more strength, I would say counterattack and the party can either try to escape or potentially be enslaved. However, since the duergar are so weakened, I would go with the caevin or retreat for them.

Great, thank you! I added these links to the OP. Just as an FYI, since this is a wiki thread, you can edit the OP directly. If you have any more sites you think are worth listing here, feel free to add them!

    Mike Mearls and "Action Economy"

Geez, Mearls must be really disappointed with how 5e turned out.

    Mike Mearls and "Action Economy"

Yeah. I mean, I could understand if he was saying that he didn't want the action economy to factor into explicit player choices, so maybe move away from things like Bonus Actions, Immediate Actions, Free Actions, Full round actions, etc. But that would be a conscious design decision for how...

    Mike Mearls and "Action Economy"

I don't get it. The notion of an action economy is fundamental in any turn-based system. What's wrong with that?

Adventure running: when the PCs skip a step, what to do?

Don't the party have access to Divination magic? If they do, and they use it, then I would ensure they get enough clear information to find the second rod. If they do and don't use it, then I would let them fail, embrace the campaign that ensues, and point out opportunities they had to succeed...

A recent thread speculating about the return of Mystara made me realize that there are a lot of great fan-run websites that serve as the unofficial canonical repositories of lore for the many settings that have been released over the years. As WotC has done very little with setting material...

Pathfinder 2E Paizo's Stephen Radney-MacFarland Previews The Rogue Class For Pathfinder 2nd Edition!

I still play 3.5 and never quite made the switch to PF1, although I really like a lot of the things Paizo did with it. That being said, this is one of the number one pet peeves I have with both systems. There are so many blanket immunities that just completely nullify broad swathes of the...

Guidance Cleric cantrip is really dumb

There certainly might be some DM judgement and intervention if the player tried to apply the god's will outside of the god's interests, as adjudicated by the DM. That's the nature of the game. I'm frankly getting tired of your innuendo and snarky sarcasm. This will be my last response to...
