    The Horror! of Player Agency

Really interesting! I don't know if I have the players for a horror game, but the book sounds cool. I really like the observation that heroic gaming is about gaining power, and horror gaming is about losing it. Well said, and I think it's quite accurate. As your options slowly dwindle, the...

GMing: A D4 of Design-Run-Discuss-Reshape to Kick Off a Campaign

Great, thought-provoking article. Thanks! That general decision loop is embedded in many things. In the US military I've seen it as the OODA loop: Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.

Hasbro's Heroquest and Chaosium’s Role in the Board Game’s Return

That would be fantastic and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it's probably not going to happen now that GW has released a new version.

    Lessons Learned from Virtual Gaming

Yeah, I've noticed that too. There are a lot more group silences, where nobody wants to speak up. That's something I miss about F2F, is how easy the conversation is. There are some good points here, such as prep taking a bit longer if you want to do tactical combat. I use...

GMing: What Keeps Long Running Campaigns Exciting?

Honestly, I'm tired of low-level adventures. I've run more introductory adventures than I care to count, and while they are fun, I find them generally predictable and uninteresting. Instead, I like the increasing freedom and the way the challenges change moving to higher tiers. I want to see...

Maybe. It was funny either way :)

They seem to, because they're still hiring.

    No Good Choices

I think a few of these types of conundrums, of small scope, definitely spice up the game. But the consequences should be small, otherwise you really do see the worst of your players. I don't want to see my players at their worst, and I don't think my players want me to bring out the worst in them.

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

It's so discordant with everything else you hear about 5E, about how new-player friendly it is compared to other versions, about how now is the best time ever to get into the game, with all the live-streams, etc., . And then you see how 5E has picked up so many new players that it makes me...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

Honestly confused, what's so bad about the new-user experience?

Blog (A5E) Meet Our ‘Level Up’ Team!

At any rate, I don't really want to distract from the real point of this thread, which is to congratulate all of the lucky and obviously incredibly talented people on the Level Up team. I'm going to bow out of further discussions about team composition. To the Level Up team, Congratulations...

Blog (A5E) Meet Our ‘Level Up’ Team!

You're missing the point. The point is that diversity of a team is a positive quality in and of itself with measurable benefits in the quality of the product. I'm very deliberately not denigrating a team of all white dudes, just as I'm not denigrating a team of all black chicks, or any other...

Blog (A5E) Meet Our ‘Level Up’ Team!

I think you're missing some nuance in how game design reflects culture. If all we had were "generic fighter" with "attack routine #1" in game design books, followed by numbers, your point might hold more true. But in fact the backgrounds of designers come out in how their designs are...

D&D 3.x Third times the charm with D&D and my son...

This is really cool to see. I've had similar experience with Sunless Citadel. It was a great intro module that worked really well to introduce my 10 yr-old twins to 3.5. I didn't worry too much (or at all) about stat block conversion and just went with the module. It worked out fine, and in...

WFRP's Death on the Reik Out In PDF

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it. I probably won't go for the conversion, in that case. That's a great idea! I'll definitely look into it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Orion Black No Longer a D&D Designer [UPDATED!]

The Internet gives a platform for the minority. That can be a great thing for exposing oppression, and it can be a detriment for making unpleasant opinions seem more prevalent. I think one of our challenges as a society is to learn to judge opinions on their merits rather than their volume...
