    D&D 5E (2014) Help! I Suck at Villains!

Also, Stockholm Syndrome does not justify kidnapping. Ever.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help! I Suck at Villains!

I agree 100%. The barbarians could very well be doing a service for the common good, but this aspect of them is decidedly black. It could be an interesting wrinkle where the PCs have to somehow aid the barbarians but still find a way to get the kidnapped women back home and get restitution...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help! I Suck at Villains!

Quick question, but how is a tracking hound supposed to help find the flying wyvern riders? That being said, what about a dwarven lich who long ago destroyed a dwarven hold far beneath the Earth? This lich desires revenge against the surface dwellers who long ago shunned him from attending a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Big Battle, Exciting Victory, 36 seconds.

36 seconds is actually a pretty long time. Sit down and for 36 seconds just imagine all the simultaneous activity going on during that battle. We play the encounter sequentially, but it really happens in parallel. So think about what just one actor did during the battle and think then whether...

Night Hag... Give Me a Break...

Nostalgic in a good way? This seems like an argument/discussion I would not enjoy with the extreme focus on trying to parse the obscure RAW, and there is still no definitive resolution. Not much has changed, really.

    Horrid DM's

Sounds like it wasn't much fun. Especially the rancid cheese balls sounds pretty nasty. For the game itself, I wonder if the DM was just pretty inexperienced? Some of those mistakes sound like things I would have done many years ago.

D&D 5E (2014) Less about the numbers and more about the concept: Judging classes in 5th edition.

I'm confused. What does it mean to judge a class based on math if you're not doing a mathematical comparison of one class or option against another? Numbers in isolation are meaningless.

D&D 5E (2014) Landholds, what do you want out of it?

When I think of landholds, I think of a fantasy-based SimCity at the scope of a county or territory. There should be guidelines for improvements over time, population growth, seasonal and climate effects, etc. It would also be cool to have a diplomatic framework to allow you to get increased...

Revisiting The Keep on the Borderlands

Hah, that's great to hear. This is actually only the second time I've run the module, the first being roughly 30 years ago. What have been some of your most memorable moments? We've had a few so far, from my perspective. The first memorable moment came on the group's very first foray to the...

Revisiting The Keep on the Borderlands

Point taken, but there are a couple of things to consider. First, the group is very aware of the Identify spell, as they already have a magical rope that they are curious about, and their discussion has turned to using the spell rather than actually experimenting, so I expect the same with the...

    D&D 5E (2014) status of 5e poison in summer 2017

I'm not aware of anything official that does what you want. I like your house rules, though! I may borrow them if someone in my campaign is into poison.

D&D 5E (2014) Conversation with NPCs turns into combat

If someone starts combat in the middle of conversation, I've always treated it as an Insight check to avoid being surprised. With an assassin or similar opponent I would use an opposed Deception roll, otherwise a simple DC 10 or so should suffice.

If you were a Wizard, what School of Magic would you teach a Tiefling over a period of months?

Conjuration, so he could reunite with his family.

My campaign idea (suggestions to improve it are most welcome)

How are they supposed to rebuild it?

Revisiting The Keep on the Borderlands

So at this point that's about the extent of the changes I've made to the module. Over the past 2+ months I've spent about 6 hours "preparing" the adventure plus whatever time spent in idle daydreams, and I'm much happier with the results. I feel like there's enough information for me to...

Revisiting The Keep on the Borderlands

Change #10 – Hidden Aid Change: I added a secret panel in room #12 area 1 that can only be opened by a use of divine power from a Lawful priest (Turn Undead, basically). Behind this panel is a silver bell engraved with the words “Strike to shatter Evil’s spell.” The bell can be struck once...

Revisiting The Keep on the Borderlands

Change #9 – Ties to the Temple Change: I gave the hobgoblins and goblins closer ties to the cult by having them wear symbols of chaos (black-stained 8-pointed star icons made of wood). In addition, I placed an adept with the hobgoblins. Reason: This follows along with my reasoning that the...

Revisiting The Keep on the Borderlands

Change #8 – Prisoner notes Change: I gave names to most of the prisoners in the Caves and jotted down notes about any ties they have back to the Keep. Reason: I’m terrible with random names at the spur-of-the-moment. When left to my own devices, all of my NPC’s become either Hank or Sue, and...
