    JRPG style TTRPGs

Haven't played, but reading these is great fun (which is a good sign): Final Fantasy RPG 4th Edition - FFRPG 4th Edition Resources - Final Fantasy RPG 4th Edition Uses a cool attribute system that is more like humors than personal traits. Final Fantasy d6 - Final Fantasy D6 More of a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Spellcaster Rules Summaries

Nice summaries! I knew I could count on the 'World. And it's a good thing that the 5RD is so "compatible" . . . are there easier casters I could be using from other games? Oddly, D&D seems to have dumped "spells known" for "spells prepared." The more you know... Given that 5e yanked...

    Mundane utility to match magic

I have two issues here: giving non-casters authorial-mundane powers is basically giving them magic, less the magic words, flashy lights, and accoutrement. The other is that if you hand out too much authorial-mundane power, the casters are going to wonder why they chose to be casters in the...

    Mundane utility to match magic

Modos RPG comes to mind, too. Even if your fighter-style character doesn't take a power (skill) and call it Rapid Impromptu Bridge Identification (or what the wizard would call Alter 4, lifting it straight from the book), you could design your hero points like this: "has an eye for...

    D&D 5E (2024) Spellcaster Rules Summaries

I tried to bone up on the new (and old) edition spellcaster rules. Using WotC literature for it was a mistake. For example, the wizard needs the following resources/rules (I think) to cast a spell: wizard spell list, spell description, a spell book, prepared spells, spell slots...

    Mundane utility to match magic

My impression is that those who don't have magic typically have another resource that makes them awesome, so they don't need a magic alternative. Fighters kill things with real tools. Thieves disappear and acquire things. Bards annoy people. Magic users . . . have utility, and they're...

    D&D 5E (2024) Defining a "Spellcaster"

I don't know about the player side, but casting one spell is what NPCs do to become fantasy NPCs, not "spellcasters." Wanna make your " ice wolf" cool? Give it an ice spell. That doesn't make it a spellcaster though, and it doesn't need to be attuning magic items.

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

Ouch. I don't know about BG3, but an enjoyable game of Skyrim can include foraging, fishing, and retiring to a little cottage, while avoiding dragon attacks. Hang out with the locals, and buy the village drunk an ale every once in a while. No Plusfinder needed. Maybe try explaining your game...

Free Adventure: Unmasking the Great Deceiver

There's some good content here! Some material is clearly written for D&D, but I can see it fueling other games as well. Any plans to offer it in a more accessible format? Bookmarked PDF? This idea came up as a theme song:

GMs - Do you get bored when you're a player?

In D&D? I stay busy trying to look up the rules that I need for my character and his next action (no small task), and I also like to ham it up if the acting player makes any references to my character. A little down time gives me more time as a player to visualize things. As DM, I don't need...

What fantasy creatures migrate with the seasons?

And gelatinous cubes. They move to warmer climes for winter, but no one knows if it's to find more food, or because they'll die if they freeze. The other mystery: no one has ever seen a gelatinous cube moving above ground . . .

    D&D General D&D Lay Offs/Corporate Re-Organization

Concern for WotC and $7.00 will get you a caffe latte. Speaking of, Starbucks faces "big problems" that their new CEO is addressing. May be layoffs there, too. Oh well. Another day in freedom-land.

Which fantasy TRPGs do you think truly reflect the characteristics of firearms as Game Changers?

Careful, that type of thinking results in things like Quidditch. Let's note that Dr. Frankenstein discovered how to make zombies (so did John Baird) and it didn't work out so well for him.

    D&D 5E (2024) Overthinking Long Rest in 2024

I miss Seattle. Go to Ladro for organic coffee. Look for Zoka or Vivace for coffee that makes Starbucks feel like a visit to Walmart. Also, do let me know if things have changed :( Ah. So it was the New Zealanders who were the first Goldilocks of milky coffee? This does not hold for all...

Which fantasy TRPGs do you think truly reflect the characteristics of firearms as Game Changers?

Modos 2 does indeed say that an arquebus ignores physical protection (AC), but that's against genre-appropriate armors. Modern weapons must defeat modern armor in the same way that ancient weapons defeat ancient armor because of what has been posted upthread: AC and HP are abstract. Abstract...
