One thing to keep in mind; ultimately, it may not really matter if the enemy winds up adjacent to the fighter. This is a polearm we're talking about, and what are they best at? Shoving people all over the place. Even if he does wind up next to the fighter, odds are he ain't gonna be there...

Even though I have provided a good reason why it doesn't *have* to be metagame to work, I think I like Zarathustran's response better. Honestly, I think it's now upon Derren & co to come up with a rational explanation why it being proudly metagame is a BAD THING.

Since the horse has the (mount) keyword, it should work, although I believe to benefit from mount-specific abilities the rider needs the feat Combat Riding (I think that's the name, don't have my books at work).
