    D&D 5E (2014) Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

How are all the replies here dismissing that?

    It's Your Turn to Play

Next level freak out comes when you make all dice rolls without breaking intense eye contact with the DM.

    It's Your Turn to Play

Good article. Like a lot of DMs this kind of hits home. I've had a few games where players just walk away at the end of a game, particularly a VTT, leaving everything where they left it like a bunch of 3 year olds. Next week they come back at the late minute confused and it takes them 10 (or...

D&D General Sampling Random Ability Scores

Easy, that means Achilles passes the tortoise.

D&D General Sampling Random Ability Scores

This is why I roll all my abilities inside a black box that cannot be observed, then my abilities are all values at the same time.

D&D General Sampling Random Ability Scores

I think think it's about impressions, it's about baselines. Once you have a standard, every character is going to be assessed as above or below that standard (or meet it). Most players do not want a character below the standard. However, using a system where variation is the norm, it becomes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Calculating a fist-sized diamond

So basically, like the value spread of magic items. Got it!

D&D General Sampling Random Ability Scores

Yes it's exactly the same. If you look at the anydice, I actually am using 3d5+3 as the model, but the system is more typically described as 3d6/reroll 1s and I didn't want people reacting to that and have to explain it's exactly the same all the time.

D&D General Sampling Random Ability Scores

I wrote a small post comparing different random agility score generation methods, why games may or may not want to use them, etc. This is an evergreen topic but I tried to include a table of the ideal stat set (all of it generated out of AnyDice with links to the originals), so you can examine a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

I think the real take away is that the sheer amount of house ruling on the topic says something about the take on the design. We're all trying to fit to a bad cut here.

    D&D 5E (2014) Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

2 rules really transformed the game for me. 1. Failed death saves are not reset when you wake up. They only clear after a long rest. 2. You can't long rest on the road (I have rules for building a basecamp in the field)

Rules FAQ How Does Stealth Work in D&D 5E?

It's perfectly reasonable to say you hear the wings flapping or even see a trail of pixie dust. It's not unreasonable to say this works as written even in this very specific edge case.

Rules FAQ How Does Stealth Work in D&D 5E?

This seems reasonable to me. I generally try to vary techniques depending on the needs of the particular session, setup, etc. One technique I often use in a situation like this is give the player a choice between what they want to risk. So rolling with this example I might say something...

Rules FAQ How Does Stealth Work in D&D 5E?

Sure, that seems like the most likely mechanism. I wrote a whole article breaking down Surprise in 5e that has a similar failing. I think this thread shows there is also a mix of people having locked in conceptions, or thinking it should be some other kind of way that is no better defined or...

Rules FAQ How Does Stealth Work in D&D 5E?

Good description. I don't really get why people have such a hard time with stealth and perception but they obviously do.

    D&D 5E (2014) Journey Actions for 5e (pt2)

Perilous Journeys in 5e Part 2: Actions and the Road went up today. It covers character actions available during travel to add some flavor to the road and give away for players to depend on one another as a group. Last weeks Perilous Journeys in 5e: Rest and the Road removed long rests during...

Like everyone. I'm assuming Cyberpunk Red is the main driver there. There have been some great streams of it on twitch of late.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do your sidekicks hit better than the PC's??

I'm not sure of the utility of looking or comparing on a single ability. Just as monster statblocks have abilities the PCs don't have, it's not about being better, it's about being easier to run quickly. As a whole, sidekicks are much weaker than PCs, having something in one area doesn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Perilous Journeys in 5e Part 1

It's a generic DC for how hard the terrain is to work in. It'll apply in part 2 when we get travel actions for the party.
