Why the Modern D&D variants will not attract new players

Celebrim, you mentioned that the D&D books were "as dry as a cookbook." I think you need to rethink that simile, because as I see it, it fits D&D perfectly. When you want to eat food, you need to make it first. You get out your cookbook and find a recipe that sounds and looks good, based on...

    Three Pillars of Character Creation

Well, then maybe there are six pillars: three roleplaying pillars (background, personality, and goals) and three mechanical pillars (race, class, and theme). Symmetry calls for a third category! Any ideas?

    Three Pillars of Character Creation

I definitely think it's a good idea! The PH2 background rules were a fine start, but when it came down to helping a new player create a character when they didn't really have any good ideas, the background bonus was just "choose a skill you want to be better at and gain +2." Themes provide a...

Dragonborn Essentials stat options..anyone know for sure?

I think Constitution will be a better score for the dragonborn, since they already rely on it so heavily. But the question is, which score can you replace Con with? Shared Classes: Cleric, Paladin, Warlord, Sorcerer No matter what, dragonborn will be good at these classes, all of which are...

    XP Levels Revealed!

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't know there were different kinds of community supporter options. Thanks!

    XP Levels Revealed!

I just got XP from one poster...and it was worth 5 XP! This person was level 5 (which in 4e a monster of level 5 is worth 200 XP, so following the patter would seemingly give 2 XP), but was a community supporter. So maybe it takes the monster XP and divides by 100, but if they're a community...

    a rather foolish question

I'd rule that the ranger and the beast combined consume the same resources as a normal adventurer. So either the beast hunts for its food and you don't have to worry about it, or each days worth of trail rations simply feeds both of you, so you don't have to pay more for food. For breathing...

Martial Exploits - Trip, Disarm, and Sunder

Why not just use combat advantage instead of making "unbalanced?" It seems that most of those situations (standing on a slippery floor, fumbling) already cause you to grant combat advantage, so another -1 to defenses isn't necessary.

Why the Modern D&D variants will not attract new players

My players have trouble with character creation too. If I guide them along through it, it's usually no problem; once they start playing they get the hang of it really quick. But I'm going to write up a guide for new players on how to create your own character.

    Class Compendium: Heroes of Legend

It's not 4.5 until they make it incompatible with all the early material. Essentials and Core can be used side by side, unlike 3.5 vs. 3.0, so it's still 4th edition.

    Gaming Terms and Memes

I've heard of the gazebo incedent, but never actually read that story. That's hilarious. My rogue's player likes to say, "I bluff (insert anything here)."

    Class Compendium: Heroes of Legend

Sounds like those of us who are only adding Essentials to our current games can skip the Heroes books and just wait for this, and it's inevitable sequels! This is exactly what I want; Essentials has been striking me as "Eh, sounds cool, but too separated from the rest of the material that I...

    Crits on Bloodbath

I would actually say to maximize the effect damage as well. It may only be adding on 1-5 damage, but in my book, anything that makes the hero more heroic is more fun, and as a plus it speeds up combat. It's only 1-5 damage, it's not going to ruin any DM master plans. Read as written, though...

Best books to get for getting into 4th Ed?

It depends on what your group is like. If you have experienced players who already have the necessary players materials, pick up the Dark Sun Creature Catalog (if you haven't already; it's absolutely necessary for Dark Sun games!), and maybe the Monster Manuals (particularly the 3rd one) if...

Why the Modern D&D variants will not attract new players

Present. As to the idea of a game made of independent systems, this sounds like a great idea in theory, and as was mentioned is good for a computer program, but it seems that in practice for a TTRPG, it wouldn't be as desireable (unless I'm misunderstanding your meaning). The enemies of the...

Switching Places with a Larger Creature

    So you're allowed to slide the creature more than one square to reach your space, as long as you don't slide it away from you? So say you're attacking a large creature between two pillars: . . . . . . . .L.L. . . . .L.L.O. . . . .O.M. . . . . . . . In that case the swap would just be illegal.

Switching Places with a Larger Creature

What happens when a Medium or Small creature switches places (like with the monk's at-will attack dragon's tail) with a creature larger than it? I'm particularly stumped when a creature or obstacle is blocking the placement of the larger creature. Currently, I'm ruling that, after the switch...

    D&D 4E Languages and 4E

I let players who pick the Linguist feat gain a +2 bonus to skill checks made when dealing with other creatures in their native language. It makes it a worthwhile feat.
