Perhaps you could make the Ring of Pyrosynthesis give Fire Resistance 30, and allow 20% of the damage to given as temporary hit points... I'd allow that as a major magic item...

I like the idea of 10 + caster level for maximum HD reached by this revision of shapechange (5 plus caster level, max 15 for polymorph), and 5 for alter self. Overall, good changes... Consider these implemented in my campaign.
