Scheduling Thread for IRON DM 2014

LOL. I'll take the credit. But which one is the truly weird one?

Ooooooh. Two Dms enter, one DM leaves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmRAiUPdRjk

Scheduling Thread for IRON DM 2014

I'm excited to see a mix of veterans and new recruits for this round. Lets get those last two spots filled and start the bloodletting! I mean competing!

Lone Wolf Prepping to bring D&D 5th Edition to HEROLAB!

I'll be one of the first in line to buy this -- I've been using Hero Lab for other games for quite some time. But I'm not as optimistic about the license as they seem to be. I hope they're right and I'm wrong!

    Running a morally gray game

We don't pay a whole lot of attention to alignment, but our group tends towards morally gray. They don't tend to take prisoners, and will likely kill them if they do, they'll usually steal anything that isn't nailed down. My recommendation is to try to imagine how your world's NPCs are going...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

QFT. This is incredibly important. One of the most heartbreaking things I can remember when we started looking at the play test material was the need to look up things like the spells monsters could cast, rather than just having that at our fingertips. It's a little easier now than it used...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

Sorry I wasn't more clear. The online tools were key, true, but also the tables and exposed math for what creatures of each level should have for abilities, HP, attack bonuses, damage for a variety of attacks, and so on. Reskinning is still possible, of course, but I find it more difficult...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

Our home game has been running the playtest 5e for about a year now, and while there are things that I like about it, as a DM I still can't do the things I could do with 4e (create new monsters, reskin old ones, etc), and I miss that terribly. I hope they don't leave those lessons behind. -rg

Converting to FATE and starting a new campaign

I recently transitioned a Savage Worlds/Necessary Evil game (players are super villains defending earth against aliens because all the super heroes are dead) into a homebrew FATE Core version of the same game. We made FATE versions of the Savage Worlds characters and just picked up the story...

Art PACT: Paying freelancers in exposure

I think you're seeing villainy where there is none, personally. Contests are a different beast. An established designer or writer would probably not enter -- they're an opportunity for new talents to try to short circuit the path to "glory". As for the question about all submissions becoming...

A Rift in Our Group - "Quickness" and "Deflection" Spells are Ruining Savage Worlds' Combat

I'd consider, for one thing, having a couple of opponents turn up using the exact same tactics/spells on the party -- after all, if it's that effective, it's not likely to remain a secret for long. And the ongoing cost of maintaining those spells (3/round total) means that he can't keep the...

Art PACT: Paying freelancers in exposure

It's an interesting question from the business side of the fence -- I think that a serious business that contracts for content should pay for it, certainly. But as long as there are people willing to write for free (or for "exposure", or access, or whatever else they see as worth the effort)...

How commonly is the GM actually the ultimate arbiter?

I share DMing duties with another DM in our group, so even if we swung that kind of power, it would be a committee rather than individual fiat. We tend to bring new people in after playing with them in other settings (RPGA games, etc), so we avoid the necessity of dealing with problem players.

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

No, it won't break the game, but it's a distinction I was missing, and I think it'll change the way things play slightly. And, actually, I'd bet the game plays better/faster that way. -rg

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

No, but the GM Can, and depending upon circumstances should, spend a fate point (one of his own) to INVOKE that twisted ankle for a penalty. And when that invoke happens, the fate point just goes away. I think. -rg

iPhone email (also diplomacy between experts and laymen)

I think we're mostly saying the same thing -- communication skills -- listening and communication your solution -- can be lacking, especially when it's necessary as a survival instinct for the expert in question. I also made a case for the recipient being an advocate for themselves, which is...

iPhone email (also diplomacy between experts and laymen)

I think this is a challenge that most "experts" face, and some work hard to be aware of and work on -- the lack of real listening skills or effort. It becomes very easy -- especially when you're pressed for time -- to short circuit conversations with people who need help -- to not listen to them...

iPhone email (also diplomacy between experts and laymen)

Another thought -- technology philosophy, etc.... More and more today we're encouraged/expect/empowered to have a relationship with content that is independent of the our relationship with different devices. Cloud storage is one expression of this, but so is IMAP email, kindle sync, dropbox...

iPhone email (also diplomacy between experts and laymen)

Kids these days, they have no respect for us soviet-era technologists. If they're too much invested in IMAP, often folks don't remember the tricks that were possible with POP3 to try to come to some sort of usable situation using a single account on multiple devices. Still, you're not doing...

iPhone email (also diplomacy between experts and laymen)

Makes sense to me -- in a POP3 world. You have your iphone settings set up to leave email on the server for 1 week (or whatever) You have your computer outlook settings set up to remove email from the server when you're done. Scenarios: Iphone First: 1. You check your email on your iphone...
