In our group we don't use xp anymore, we just level up when we see fit (i.e. if a player wants to and the rest agrees). In one weekly campaign we have been level 14 for more than 6 months now. I'd drop the Encounter xp, and go with pure story/achievement based xp, that way you can advance the...

    Campaign setting recommendations

Here is what I have done: First I cut way down on magic items. I go for a world with few (but also often powerful) magic items, where all magic items have a history. No magic shops. No wizards advertising for custom items. No temples selling potions, or even giving bulk discounts. Most people...

I would not blame the authors either - I blame the writers of the sourcebooks who treat the stories as canon.

    Campaign setting recommendations

In response to the previous poster: The metaplot is, imho, a big flaw of the FR. The fact that novels drive the history of the realms onward, often "solving" plot hooks and shaping the world year after year, is very frustrating for a DM that wants the PCs to do those things. If the PCs finally...

I DM two campaigns in FR, but I have heavily modified the setting. The fact that it blatantly uses historical cultures is imho a plus - it offers me a whole lot of additional material and inspiration when I alter and revise the region I center a campaign in. The whole load of novels is a mixed...

    favorite place to play

I prefer my own appartement. I have access to all my sourcebooks, my fridge, my CD-collection, and don't have to walk far.

[3.5] Perform -- Does it annoy you as well?

Heck, I often purposefully weaken my PCs, and even I think the new perform skill is bad, for the same reasons. You can always choose less than you are allowed to.

[3.5] Perform -- Does it annoy you as well?

Honestly, are you really unable to just choose that your PC cannot dance as well as he can sing, and is not familiar with any other form of performance? Do you feel compelled to pick 10 kinds of performances just because you are allowed to even if you don't want to? I hope for you that you are...

[3.5] Perform -- Does it annoy you as well?

I don't need this change to define my PC - I can just choose my bard to only know dancing and singing. I fail to see how anyone needs this change just to limit his or her PC.

[3.5] Perform -- Does it annoy you as well?

You are right. Just for your information - I did not choose my Bard's ninth level feat until level 10 or so, I have a sorceress with several known spells not yet chosen (also since a couple levels) who had unallocated skill points for weeks after leveling, and you can bet my bard has not "maxed"...

[3.5] Perform -- Does it annoy you as well?

No one forces you to choose all possible forms for each rank. I can make a bard and just state that he can only dance and sing, and nothing else, under the 3E rules. I don't have to pick 23 forms of perform if I do not want to. That is what I mean when I say that no one forces me or you to pick...

[3.5] Perform -- Does it annoy you as well?

Well, no one forces you to choose a new form of performance each time you get a new rank - I know I don't do it with my bard. Under the 3E system I can play a bard that only uses 1 form of performance as well as a more diversified bard, with either being as capable with regards to bardic music...

    Is The Paladin Weak?

Very good post, firelance. I always cringe when people want to modify a core class based on "how it should be the best (insert speciality, terrain, something else or nothing)". The ranger was the worst offender in that case, but there are others as well. IMHO, you should always consider balance...

    The moment of fragmentation

With the amount of 3rd party material you already have to state what material you are using - splatbooks, FRCS, KoK, OA - to name only the official ones. The thought that 3E was a unified system used almost identically among all gamers is an illusion, especially when it concerns the part of the...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] They didn't fix SR

Hmm... First, SR is only a problem if your DM is overdoing it - which is the case if you have no fun due to SR being too common. A few words to the DM can (and should) solve that problem easily. And if your DM, upon told that you hate to encounter creature after creature with SR, still persists...

    The moment of fragmentation

I often discover in discussions on those boards that house rules and differing rules interpretations are more common than I'd expect and that is only the mechanical aspect of the game. Add in the campaign settings, often with special rules as well, DM taste in NPCs, monsters etc, and playstyle...

    online npc generator

I can vouch for this one: http://www.stanford.edu/~marke/npc.html It gives gear, spells prepared, spells in spellbook, and it does not choose feats, stats etc. as randomly as other generators, but more intelligently (with still a chance for some "odd" choices to spice things up. You can also...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Alter Self

Well, the 3E Alter Self is, imho, the most overpowered 2nd level spell in the whole book. It couild stand to lose a bit power.

    Feats for bards ???

I took lingering song with my bard as the feat for 9th level. It serves well when you inspire courage first round, then follow up with inspire greatness(es) while the inspire courage effects linger.
