Just for your information - I did not choose my Bard's ninth level feat until level 10 or so, I have a sorceress with several known spells not yet chosen (also since a couple levels) who had unallocated skill points for weeks after leveling, and you can bet my bard has not "maxed"...

Hmm... First, SR is only a problem if your DM is overdoing it - which is the case if you have no fun due to SR being too common. A few words to the DM can (and should) solve that problem easily. And if your DM, upon told that you hate to encounter creature after creature with SR, still persists...

Well, the 3E Alter Self is, imho, the most overpowered 2nd level spell in the whole book. It couild stand to lose a bit power.

I took lingering song with my bard as the feat for 9th level. It serves well when you inspire courage first round, then follow up with inspire greatness(es) while the inspire courage effects linger.
