D&D 4E Stephen Radney-MacFarland on Conversions and Adventures in 4e

On your first point, I would maintain that it is no different in 3e. If the party wants to try and negotiate with an ogre in 3e, you will note that there are no skills appropriate for such a course of action in the ogre write up. You have to assume it, or give them Bluff -2, Diplomacy -2 and...

    Confused about NPC/Monster generation

I'm really excited about this new system. It looks like we'll be able to eyeball monsters very easily. I've been toying around with that in 3e, with some limited success. I have to say that I am not a GM who assumes that all tough monsters will magic weapons and armor. It's cool when they do. If...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

I've got to sign out of this argument for now. It's time to go play my White Raven character from Bo9S. It's good to know now that I can boss the other party members around in exchange for the bonuses I provide. It will sure surprise the rest of my party, since there's no support for it in the...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

Since we were told that the powers from the White Raven school have mostly migrated over to the warlord, you should take a look at them. That class does not lecture another class on how to outflank a goblin. It has attacks that provide party members with extra attacks, increased flanking...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

This is the totality of your argument, both here and in the many other threads where you've said the same thing. We've been shown text from the PHB that will clarify the role. We all know that you don't like the name warlord, bit the class will no more be capable of ordering other players around...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

The only reason that the "leader" role wasn't called "supporter" is because no one wants to play a supporter. Nonetheless, that is exactly what the "leader" role implies. We've been given the text from the PHB that refutes the idea that the character with the leader class is in anyway the leader...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

It is pure stubbornness based on a dislike for the name of the class. Designers have refuted this definition of the class, here - on these message boards. To keep making an argument that has been disproved by the designers is misleading - at best.

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

We all know that this is not what the class represents (even if the name would imply otherwise). It is pure stubbornness to define the class in the a manner at odds with its design concept and then argue against that definition as if it were accurate. This is the very definition of a straw man...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

I wouldn't want both leader classes in the PHB to be based on the divine. I am looking forward to playing a warlord in one of the first 4e campaigns to start up in our group. I have no desire to play a paladin. It has nothing to do with paladins being goody-goody - I know that they don't have to...

    D&D 3.x Problems with 3.5 I don't wanna see in 4th

I'm just curious. Did the characters know an encounter was coming? If not, how did they know to get everyone into the extradimensional space? If yes, didn;t the attackers spot the characters? They spend a while getting everyone into the space, I assume. Couldn't the attackers have seen them...

Seriously? Spellcasters will not be able to have many spell choices?

You're right about GURPS. RQ tends the same direction if you don't play in Glorantha. Many GMs prefer homebrews, and many players are turned off by the extreme flavor of the official setting.

Seriously? Spellcasters will not be able to have many spell choices?

There is less of this is Fantasy HERO than in Champions, but we noticed it in both. The flavor was different on each character, but the mechanics approached sameness. As more xp was gained, all of the characters tended towards the campaign maxima in PD, ED, DCs etc... In the end, almost everyone...

Have These Basic Questions been answered yet?

I believe that both systems will be presented, without one of them being a default system. I would bet that hp will be the same as before with two exceptions: 1) Triple maximum hp at 1st level 2) No class uses d4 for hit points These rules are in use in SWSE, and I think I read that both of...

Brilliant Idea for WotC: "Classic Settings" books (and a poll, of sorts)

Hmmm. Since I'm looking forward to the new FR, and think it is in no way a slaughter, I would have to disagree with you. I would like WotC to redo the settings listed above. I wouldn't want another Dragon Magazine Dark Sun fiasco.

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

I don't think this attitude is present in D&D 4e either. The designers mention fantastic locations and terrain, but that's likely because it was never called out in earlier editions of the game, which seemed to focus entirely on the mundane in world building. Humans still seem to be the...

Seriously? Spellcasters will not be able to have many spell choices?

That's been my experience. I ran one RQ campaign for 3 years and a GURPS campaign for about the same amount of time.

Brilliant Idea for WotC: "Classic Settings" books (and a poll, of sorts)

Now that I've had time to think about it, here's my list: 1. Kara-Tur 2. Dark Sun 3. Spelljammer 4. Al-Qadim 5. Mystara 6. Dragonlance 7. Ravenloft Probably wouldn't bother to buy it: Birthright Greyhawk Jakandor Maztica Planescape Ravenloft

Seriously? Spellcasters will not be able to have many spell choices?

I just have anecdotal evidence to go on. I ran Runequest from the 1980s until about 2000. I ran demos of GURPS at conventions from 2000 until about 2004. Players always began with varied character builds, but as the xp accumulated they began to achieve a sort of munchkiny blandness. The...

    D&D 4E Why I'm "Meh" About 4E

[Bold face is mine, for emphasis.] This is exactly the type of post that starts flame wars. It may not look like D&D to you, but there is nothing that makes the style of D&D you prefer to be the one and only definition of D&D. There is something incredibly elitist and narrow about saying: 4e...

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

I know where you're coming from. This was exactly where I was in previous campaigns. Note that I'm not implying that I've advanced, or made progress, or anything like that. My own tastes have changed. One of the things that every GM and gaming group must decide for itself is how they deal with...
