    What are your Halflings like?

I'm not particularly wedded to any particular version of halflings, though to be honest I don't think I've ever seen anyone play one in my circle of gamers.

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

First, are you sure 'doesn't like' = 'doesn't mind'? Second, so? The OP was asking 'what's the big deal.' The answer is 'X folks don't like it because of Y.' Step 1: 'What's so bad'? The names are bad because they don't evoke what they are and aren't convenient for certain folks to use. Step...

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

Well, for those of us who find it annoying, it's more the idea of seeing a LOT of things like it. Remembering one bizarre, unevocative name or changing the label is no big deal; I think almost everyone would agree. The problem comes if you are remembering/changing dozens and dozens of labels...

    Rainbow Ray vs Scorching Ray

-1 to attack rolls is like giving everyone a +1 bonus to AC good against anything (touch attacks, etc) from that one character. That can make a huge difference... or not, depending on dice. But to do that AND do damage, well. Not bad.

Of gishes and arcane defencers and whatnot: Is 4th ed. language for everyone?

I think the problem is that ranger spellcasting is too weak. Bard is almost a perfect gish-in-a-box, the one true single-class choice of the core classes. Any time I contemplate some arcane/warrior 'build,' I often stop and think, 'Ok, can I pull this off as a bard?' Saves you a lot of trouble.

What Knowledge Skill do you use/allow?

I use the skills listed in 3.5e book, and no others; I find it's enough detail, with a few weird selections for those interested, and synergizes decently with the rest of the game. I'm still debating if Knowledge devotion (from Complete Champion) is horribly broken or a nice way to make...

Of gishes and arcane defencers and whatnot: Is 4th ed. language for everyone?

Yes. The lack of a clear meaning is a feature, not a bug.

How to make 'being surrounded by enemy crossbowmen' deadlier?

I second (third? Fourth?) E6. If you don't feel comfortable with characters being glowing superbeings, then you don't want to play D&D at 10+ level. Alternately, you could have regions where everyone is higher level. So in The Fire Wastes of Doom, even the peasants are 6th level, because...

Of gishes and arcane defencers and whatnot: Is 4th ed. language for everyone?

You know, as a long time gamer, I initially balked at so artificial a term. But then I thought about it... there really isn't any other term that encapsulates 'mage + warrior' at all well; warmage comes closest but it's two syllables and could just as easily mean 'wizard who specializes in...

3.X Zombies: How Can They Be More Of a Threat?

Another possibility occurs to me... make 3/4 of the zombies 'aid another' the remaining quarter, particularly if the party's AC is otherwise too high. Sure, it sounds weird, but consider the 'helpful' aspect of grabbing at the character.

3.X Zombies: How Can They Be More Of a Threat?

If you want higher CR zombies, I highly suggest doing something other than adding undead HD. Undead HD suck terribly. My vote is give them fighter levels, and let them select monster feats (natural weapon, natural attack, etc.) as fighter feats. I also like the ghoul idea, combined with the...

    DR/materials -> Bane

Some discussion on rpg.net about the annoyances of the DR/materials system (IE: DR/silver, and so on) got me thinking... there's a principle in game design that players enjoy mechanics of reward more than mechanics of punishment. The point of DR/materials rules is to reward forethought and...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

As an aside, the book 'Ancient Inventions' is pure awesome, and really inspires for some of the technology you might see in historic games, particularly if you start dosing in magic. Romans, for example, had obstetric equipment unmatched until the last century or so. Ancient Indians had...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Just a minor note to say that BMI is a horrible horrible thing, mainly because it's terribly inaccurate and at the same time misused rather widely by the medical community. (BMI was originally developed as a statistical population tool in the 1800s.)

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

You know, it occurs to me that I may have misunderstood what they meant when the devs said 'we want to reduce the number of stacking bonuses.' I assumed they meant 'we want fewer bonuses to worry about.' Maybe they were rather specifically saying 'now most bonuses don't add together.' ... Sigh.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Well, I really don't like rerolls, and I really REALLY don't like rerolls that can be lower than your original roll. Aura; I hope it has an in-setting explanation. I also feel wary about it because while they've stated they are simplifying bonuses and such, it sounds very much otherwise. Still...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

I figure an elf interested in long life would go for one of those options to extend life: Lich, for fun and profit! 20th level druid (in 3.5e, at least) Bargain for a celestial template (or similar). Really, lots of ways to be immortal if you are committed to it. Personally, I like the idea...

AOO's have to go, or be changed

Anyone think it'd break things horribly to simply say 'if your guard is down, you draw AoOs'? Base rule is one AoO per cause per target, so yeah, while it sucks if you go paralyzed in the middle of a group... how often does that happen? Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you DO go helpless...
