Frost giants? Wow. I think I've seen frost giants... twice since I started playing in basic D&D?

    Are Rituals Vaporware?

Perform is clearly used to earn money in down time to further combat ability. It DOES power bard powers used for combat. It can serve as a distraction in combat. Therefore, it is a combat ability. Profession is also used for money. Each individual Profession can have great relevance in...

What's your take on the Leadership feat?

I think my first use of Leadership was a ranged rogue who needed, essentially, a pocket wizard to cast Improved Invisibility and other buffs on him. Why? Because the party casters didn't want to do it. FINE. It was stupid and abusive, but fit the rules, so. And then someone figured out 'you...

    Are Rituals Vaporware?

Lizard, can you name one ability/skill/character anything in 3rd edition which had absolutely nothing to do with combat?

Slightly tricky brooch of Shielding question (was easy)

Well, wands have one advantage over scrolls; caster level is irrelevant. So you could have a kobold sor1 with a wand of Resist Energy at CL 11 and he could use it happily. Mind you, it's freakin' unlikely that a 1st level character could afford to use such a wand, but you get the idea.

What's your take on the Leadership feat?

I've used it/seen it used, and the problem is that it adds a LOT more complexity. I mean, if everyone takes it? That's twice the number of decisions everyone has to make. And many players in my circle take a long time to make decisions already. We sort of made an informal agreement not to use it...

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

Uh, I don't know where you saw those pro-4e threads, but most of the pro-4e threads I've read are much more focused on stroking themselves raw about how unbelievably wonderful 4e is and how excited they are and so on. Very few focus at all on 3e.

DDI, are you ready to game on the Net?

I voted 'no.' I play online all the time, on chat, on MUSH, and so forth. I have absolutely no need for DDI to help me; I already have Maptools if I want, but even then I mainly use it when I run sessions just to help remind me where folks are; other folks are happy just hearing descriptions...

E6, item creation, and balance issue

Yeah. Item caster level is SO often a source of confusion. It's only meant for things like SR, dispel magic, detect magic, and the like. As long as someone can cast cat's grace, they can create ANY gloves of dexterity (+6 if they wish)

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

I like the idea of one-hit mooks that can be built more powerfully. The problem, in 3e, with throwing a horde of low-hit point creatures at a moderately leveled party is that the horde's hit bonuses and damage are so low they pretty much just stand there waiting to be hit. It'd be more...

    Friggen Laser Beams

Well, one thing that intrigues me is some of the comments about using non-Dex bonuses to AC (like Int, maybe Wis?). If the general design is that everyone CAN have a decent AC if they build that way, then allowing clerics to do so is no big deal. We'll see, but I'm more heartened.

    Ugly Half-Orc Backstory

Some good points... One variation on the rich/strong orc husband is that many women in various situations would be quite happy to have a husband who can protect them against other men, or protect the home, or... or the countless reasons other than romance. Even a nasty orc could be preferable...

    Friggen Laser Beams

Oddly enough, clerics with 'frikken laser beams' is one of the things I saw as encouraging. I WANT to be able to play a cleric who doesn't wear armor, hangs back, and calls upon divine energies to turn someone into a shrub, blast another apart with holy power, and then heal is comrades.

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

Oh sure. The thing is, this had many subtle effects. Here's one: I can go to d20srd.org at any time and check rules without digging through books. Here's another: if I felt like it, I could cut/paste stuff from d20srd.org (or some other source) and make a 'cheat sheet' of useful rules for my...

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

My one point of agreement is the open gaming thing. I'm VERY disappointed with the direction 4e is going, and I honestly think they are doing themselves a disservice.

    Ugly Half-Orc Backstory

Well, given the meta nature of the strip, I could easily imagine Elan 'changing' into a different class due to the action of the gods, and then when bard gets released changing yet again. ;)

Drowned from MM3 - Q about Drowning Aura

Eh. You just need a single barrier and some ranged attacks, a character or three with Fly, etc. Drowned are highly situational opponents. If you play to their strengths, they are very deadly. If you play to their weaknesses, they are very easy.

    D&D 4E Piracy and 4e

It is application and usage of words in broad contexts that is suggestive, Zil. And it's not a matter of sides, but if people have strong axiomatic beliefs about certain things, it's kind of pointless discussing those beliefs for very long. Xechnao: While the expression/packaging of ideas has...

    D&D 4E Piracy and 4e

Saying 'ideas should be free' and then using an example where people donate lots of money to you doesn't translate to 'ideas are free,' it's just a different way of marketing ideas. Now, some folks have been maintaining that the classic vendor model of selling products just doesn't work as well...

    D&D 4E Piracy and 4e

Nytmare: You're just creating a different scheme to get paid, though; one that I really like, mind you. But how fun would all that be if nobody ever donated, or if you weren't allowed to be paid for it?
