    D&D 5E (2014) Should player's assume if it's in the DMG then it's RAW?

A lot of the stuff in the DMG isn't even rules, but suggestions about how it can be handled, at the DM's discretion.

    D&D 5E (2014) Variant rule oversight?

At first I was planning to do the same as Warmaster says above, not letting one disadvantage cancel all advantages, and vice versa (but not counting how many and still just rolling 2d20). Once we started playing I discarded the idea as being unnecessarily complicated. I find it seldom matters...

D&D 5E (2014) Flatfooted? Or: Advantage on Surprise?

You don't have advantage when attacking surprised enemies - not being able to act or react for a round is bad enough.

    D&D 5E (2014) Impossible Ability Test

I dare say it wasn't a camel the character couldn't identify, but a rarer beast.

    D&D 5E (2014) Impossible Ability Test

There is an uncertainty to be resolved. If the player gets a high enough result they will know that the information is, at least to them at this stage, not obtainable. With a low roll they only know that they are not familiar with it. Just like a perception check to see whether there really...

    D&D 5E (2014) Impossible Ability Test

The good way to handle it would have been to set a ridiculously high DC and just say that the character didn't recognise it, without explanation. (Or thought it was something else, which is much more fun.) As it is, talk to each other about how you want the campaign to run. It is perfectly ok...

    D&D 5E (2014) CR 13 dragon beaten by level 7 party observations

Is it time for B.A.D.D. again? ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG excerpt: Carousing!

    A carousing paladin? O, tempora! O, mores!

    D&D 5E (2014) How do royalty die in D&D?

Raise Dead does not always work - the will of the gods and fate has a say in it. Oh, sure, it works for PCs all the time. You did read that bit about fate above, didn't you? ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighting Style - Archery

It's not as if it'd break the game and be totally overpowered. If anybody gets the least bit if enjoyment out of it, let them. Don't block your players unnecessarily.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG excerpt: Carousing!

A new excerpt from the DMG - Downtime activities - is up. It has rules, and a table, for carousing! :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighting Style - Archery

The difference between a spear and a javelin is very small. Most can be used either way. A pilum was made to be used at short range, or in hand to hand. Legionaries often had lighter thrown spears as well. It'd be very odd if a spear made primarily to be thrown was not a ranged weapon, however.

D&D 5E (2014) Song of Rest stacking question

You could let them roll two dice and take the best, if you think adding them is too good.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

You just have to remember that kickstarters are not preorders, but investment in a future product. Handle with care. Invest in what you really believe in, not just hype. We've seen many games that have been funded just because of an interesting pitch, but then have turned out bland and...

D&D 5E (2014) Spectres, Hit point loss and temp HP

I don't even understand this debate. Hit points are, after all hit points. Some of them are temporary, and can during that time exceed the normal maximum hit points. That's it, really.

The only mistake they could make is not having fun.

D&D 5E (2014) Unique Ways to Use Inspiration

I love giving narrative control to the players, and hero points of any ilk is a good and simple way to do it. Inventing and introducing minor NPCs is a fun thing to allow. They may not always get exactly what they want, and it is up to me to decide if I like their proposal. (Player invented...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Starter Set and In-box Handholding

As Morrus says, the scenario is what is holding the DM's hand as it goes along. But I think it is safe to say that the aim for the starter isn't to get 12 year olds who have never played RPGs before. It caters to the larger, primary, market of people who know what it is and want to start with...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: The Multiverse

I think you all are missing an important point: That is, if you want to play pre-Wars, From the Ashes or Living Greyhawk, do so. Do not feel constrained by any material wizards publishes. Take your pick between 2e, 3e, 4e or post Sundering Forgotten Realms. If you want the most famous...
