    Coup de grace

But this doesn't make sense with the last line of CDG. You're only unconscious when you're at 0 or lower. So how can you use a CDG to drop someone to zero? If they have more than zero hp, they're conscious, and thus ineligible to CDG. Being asleep is not the same as being unconscious. In my...

    Intoxicated

I think it's intentional. They're trying to simulate being numb to pain or somesuch. Not sure if it's the best of ideas.

    Coup de grace

I think those rules are poorly written. I read it as you take one action to knock a helpless person unconscious and dying (0 hp), then you can take another action (on a future round) to kill the now unconscious person. I.e. it takes 2 rounds to kill a helpless person, or just 1 round if you're...

    First Impressions?

For some reason, on first reading it feels a lot like 2E to me. Well, a saner 2E with advantage/disadvantage instead of bonuses/penalties.

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

I wonder what this says about cleric healing. 1. This Hit Dice stuff is entirely outside combat. 2. Mearls said they want parties without Clerics to be viable. Do you think that means that Cleric combat healing will be weaker than previous editions? I'm not really sure that those two ideas...

Paladins - to be, or not to be?

Because Michael Carpenter and Paksenarrion are not clerics.

Paladins - to be, or not to be?

Excellent point. Clearly I'm missing a virtue. Maybe Justice? Or maybe just Good?

Paladins - to be, or not to be?

I agree with this. My virtues that would define all paladins would be something like, "Faith, Honour, Courage, Sacrifice". All paladins would hold those virtues as ideals, but I don't think you have to necessarily be Lawful Good to have those virtues. I do think a paladin should be non-Evil though.

Playing Diablo III - No time to post.

Yes, you would be under or over levelled. But it depends how close the two of you are. So far, I would say that up to 7 levels isn't that big a deal.

Playing Diablo III - No time to post.

It's a little bit more complicated than that. The idea of "quest" in D3 is slightly different than most RPGs. It more accurately corresponds to "level" in a game like Super Mario Bros. That is, a quest is not a property of your character, but a property of the game you join. So there is no real...

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

There are multiple types of testing. To use a software analogy, you have two extremes of tests. One type is called "end-to-end" or integrated testing. This is where you test the entire system from start to end, and make sure that all the components work well with each other. The other extreme...

    Rethinking the 3-Book Model

I'm not sure the 3-book model is the best, but it seems "less worse" than all the other models. The real problem is the three lists: list of spells/feats/powers, list of magic items, list of monsters. Essentially, each list takes up so much space that you need to put each list in a separate...

    The Legend of Korra

Did you see today's? Aman is a superb villain. Effective, brilliant, and yet with an underlying sense of righteousness. The way he used the finals as a metaphor for their society was a beautiful piece of rhetoric. I think today's episode pushed it up into great.

    Brainstorming Beautiful "Orcs" and "Goblins"

Another idea is to take elves, maybe knock off the pointed ears, and add something that differentiates themselves. Maybe wings. Then just go with the standard cold and cruel, but the fact that they have wings will be enough that the resulting culture and society will be very different than elves.

    Brainstorming Beautiful "Orcs" and "Goblins"

Perhaps something like the Aristos from Catherine Asaro's Skolian novels. They're a race of empaths, but their empathy is twisted such that they feel pleasure when others feel pain. They're beautiful, but cruel. They have an empire built on slavery, though only the topmost caste are true Aristos.

Would You Use A (Villainous) Race Like This?

Why not link the color changing with the seasons? You currently have two changes in the race: change in skin color as they age; and change in temperment as the seasons change. You could simplify and link the two changes, having the external skin color reflect the internal change of temperment...

    is the Pandora algorthm broken

I do see Janx's point. If A is similar to B, then B should be similar to A. For example, let's define musical similarity as a spectrum: A - B - C - D - E This means that C is closer to B than to A. If we say that Pandora should show music within one degree of similarity, then starting with A...

Would You Use A (Villainous) Race Like This?

What I'm trying to say is that the best races can be summed up in a sentence that gets to the heart of who they are. Elf: Beautiful and terrible immortals who are slowly fading away as a people. Dwarf: Short, dour warrior smiths who live underground. Drow: Evil, matriarchal elves who live...

Would You Use A (Villainous) Race Like This?

It feels like they are missing something. The element that would make everything hang together. Right now, it feels a little like you took elves (specifically the aes sídhe) and added some color-changing and the ageing cycle. In particular, those two elements seem tacked on. As does the clan...
