    D&D 5E (2014) adventure scenario by iserith

I honestly don't remember; at least 30 minutes? I'm not sure. Now we've have had a chance now to run your other one-shot Seahorse Run and I wanted to tell you about that, too! I have to admit the write-up was fun, although I probably should have given them a chance to gather more info on...

    5e stackable Advantage and Disadvantage

We sort of use stackable adv/disadv, in that we ignore the line in the PHB that multiple sources of adv/disadv all cancel each other out. So if you have 3 sources of adv, and one source of disadv, that means you still have advantage. YMMV

D&D 5E (2014) Encumbrance rule, do you use it?

I'll just say again that ignoring encumbrance is a teeny tiny power gain at most, in my opinion, and easily overshadowed by any class ability, and easily rolled into "who cares" once characters reach higher levels. Dwarves having a special racial rule for encumbrance doesn't make any difference...

D&D 5E (2014) Encumbrance rule, do you use it?

Ha, didn't expect that poor wording to catch so much attention! Yes, from what I wrote that doesn't make sense, but in this case the players were specifically immersed in the situation in the game - in their characters, who are all basically nobles, and in the situation, where someone had...

D&D 5E (2014) Encumbrance rule, do you use it?

Anime rules. Everyone has a portable hole on them at all times. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Subtle and Not-So-Subtle Spellcasting

I think the spells themselves lend themselves to this type of interpretation. I mean, reading Charm Person, that's the sort of interaction you get in your mind immediately. What is not obvious or really intuitive is the little "S" and "V" near the spell name. That doesn't mean much to someone...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell slots or spell points? Which do you prefer and why?

Points. I'll never go back. To be fair, if you were able to browse my post history from years ago you'd see I've been trying to make spell points work forever. They didn't work in 3.5 because spells went up in power too quickly. But 5.0 does it right, and points work very well. They're only...

D&D 5E (2014) Encumbrance rule, do you use it?

Nope. 5.0 is a bit better on the whole "pick up every piece of armor" situation since there's not really any reason to pick up old swords, armor, etc. because that stuff isn't meticulously statted out on enemies nor considered part of the treasure. So it's easier to hand-wave that it's all...

    improving the ranger

Have you played one at higher levels, though? Also, why would you bring a ranger if you could have a paladin (also a 1/2 caster) or a druid (which does everything a ranger can do but better)? They definitely do great damage through level 5, but past the midpoint I'm concerned. Glad you liked...

    D&D 5E (2014) adventure scenario by iserith

Oh, I forgot to mention - they totally picked up on the Ghostbusters reference within seconds. :) It probably would have gone a little worse, but their rolls are so good it's hard to say. I see your point about the active checks, but given that my party is invested so heavily into perception...

    D&D 5E (2014) adventure scenario by iserith

iserith - Hey! I totally used one of your adventure scenarios and wanted to let you know about it! :) For those who haven't seen the link, iserith has a bunch of quick one-shots (and some longer stuff) here. One of the one shots called Seahorse Run has some randomly inserted discussion here...

D&D 5E (2014) Zone spells and amazing damage potential

The issue with this interpretation is that you can chuck someone into a cloud of daggers and it does nothing to them. Also, it's hard to reason that if you walk into a cloud of daggers it hurts, but if the cloud were to pass through you it wouldn't. Not saying they couldn't have figured out a...

D&D 5E (2014) Lost Mine of Phandelver tips n tricks

Keep in mind that the castle is no joke. The goblin cave isn't any joke either if you've only got 3 players, but the castle needs people to be level 2 minimum, and even then it can get them. Level 3 makes a HUGE difference. My players were level 2 and barely made it through the last couple of...

3rd-Party Apps for 5E Rising From The Dead!

I get that their IP is their IP and they don't want others infringing - that's perfectly fair. It's sad that something that people really, really want and can use - like an online character generator (for all PHB characters) - still doesn't exist ~8 months after it should have been released.

D&D 5E (2014) What's your campaign storyline about? Here is mine.

I tend to do well with stealing large plot lines wholesale from RPG video games. My longest game ever was a rip-off of most of Elder Scrolls: Battlespire, with a little Oblivion (and other Elder Scrolls lore) thrown in to round it out. We did another one recently that was a fairly heavy copy...

D&D 5E (2014) Zone spells and amazing damage potential

I think someone upthread already said this, but I think I can summarize your change thusly: "when a creature enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there it takes damage" change to "once per round, when a creature enters the spell's area or starts its turn there...

    [5.0] Chocobos!

You have nailed my exact thoughts on the red. I used a slightly different way to calculate it all up but reached the same conclusion. The thing that makes this extra tricky is that the spell is only 3 rounds, 1/day, and it's meant to be used at range - like 120' range. If this creature is...

D&D 5E (2014) Zone spells and amazing damage potential

In reply to the OP: yup. I just had this discussion with a player who is now a level 3 druid. Moonbeam, Cloud of Daggers, Blade Barrier, Spirit Guardians - there are tons of spells that say "when a creature enters the spells area on a turn or starts its turn there" damage happens. Think...

    [5.0] Chocobos!

Running a Final Fantasy Tactics / Tactics Advanced-inspired campaign, you've got to have chocobos! These are based off FFT only; there are several other colors but these give a decent variety. Thank you to Tormyr for your Monster CR Calculator - I am not sure I understand it completely but...
